Dr Damian Coleman is the Director of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, and has responsibility for the programmes, research and the knowledge exchange activity that takes place in this field.
Research and knowledge exchange
Dr Coleman has supervised thirteen Ph.D. students to completion and is also an experienced examiner for taught and non-taught post graduate provision. Dr Coleman’s work is primarily in the areas of cycling efficiency, dehydration and running performance, training/nutritional/weight loss strategy and performance, although he also supervises work in the areas of isometric exercise and health, and load carriage during exercise. Dr Coleman also has a keen interest in data analysis in the sport and exercise sciences.
Teaching and subject expertise
Dr Coleman contributes to the undergraduate and post graduate programmes in the areas of Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Research Methods, and he also supervises dissertation studies in his field. Dr Coleman thoroughly enjoys the challenge of teaching in these areas and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Dr Coleman is an experienced external examiner and has examined for the award of Ph.D.
In the past Dr Coleman was a very keen cyclist and enjoyed racing at local and national events and can list national medals, a top ten finish in the British Best All-rounder competition, and a divisional silver medal on the road. The exceptional off road trails around Canterbury now provide the terrain where Dr Coleman rides his mountain bike to maintain fitness and commute on a daily basis.
