International Affairs: Foreign Policy and Defence Implications of Brexit
Dr Amelia Hadfield, Jean Monnet Chair in European Foreign Affairs, and Director of the Centre for European Studies at Canterbury Christ Church University chaired the event “International Affairs: Foreign Policy and Defence Implications of Brexit” at Chatham House on the 24th of May, 2016. Dr Hadfield opened the proceedings by welcoming everyone, and situating the referendum debate in the context of definitions that ranged from absolute to relative, encouraging attendees to think critically about use of key terms, including sovereignty, power, interdependence, and finance. Professor Richard Whitman, Director of the Global Europe Centre at the University of Kent began, with his appraisal of the UK's future diplomatic strategy. Richard was followed by Dr Tim Oliver, Dahrendorf Fellow on Europe-North America Relations at the London School of Economics then explored two sets of bilateral consequences of a Brexit: that of US–UK connections comprising the ‘Special Relationship’ and US–EU relations. Professor Matthew Uttley, Chair in Defence Studies at the King's College London, then took the floor, Matthew Uttley examining the implications of a Brexit on defence procurement and defence industries in the UK itself, and across other EU member states. All three contributors agreed with Dr Hadfield the Referendum was a pivotal moment affording a range of uneasy self-reflections for Britain and the EU alike. Half an hour of active Q&A from a packed audience ensued, with Dr Hadfield concluding the event, and welcoming attendees to continue their discussions at the concluding reception. See more on this event, including information to the Chatham House inhouse journal of International Affairs, who sponsored the event.
