KENT AND MEDWAY: DELIVERING A BREXIT BORDER POLICING, SECURITY, FREIGHT AND CUSTOMS

BREXIT: THE PROPOSED UK-EU SECURITY TREATY. HOUSE OF LORDS. EU COMMITTEE 18TH REPORT OF SESSION 2017–19.

In June, CEFEUS submitted its 8th written evidence to the Parliament. The final report entitled ‘Brexit: the proposed UK-EU security treaty’ was published by the House of Lords on 11thJuly 2018. To our delight, CEFEUS’s written evidence submission was directly referenced in the final report 5 times, in terms of supporting statements to current EU procedures in place and their importance to the UK.

A new report into the impact of Brexit upon health and social care provision in Kent and Medway paints an alarming picture, if authorities don’t take immediate action to combat the challenges the county is facing.

CEFEUS evidence to Food Inquiry published

The Centre for European Studies is pleased to confirm that it has had recent evidence published by the Commons Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Inquiry, entitled Brexit: Trade in food, looks at the impact that Britain's departure from the European Union will have on the Rural Economy, and specifically the ability to grow cheaper, domestically-sourced food. The evidence submitted was largely drawn from the recent CEFEUS July 2017 which examined the impact Brexit will have on Kent and Medway SMEs and the Rural Economy. The evidence can be accessed from the following link.

Kent and Medway: Making a Success of Brexit a Sectorial Appraisal

Kent and Medway: making a success of Brexit a sectorial appraisal was launched at the Houses of Parliament on Monday, 12 December 2016, hosted by Helen Whately, MP for Faversham and Mid Kent.

The report looks at modes by which to seize opportunities, mitigate risks, and identify specific ‘asks’ of the national government on behalf of the county, at a time when the national Brexit schedule itself is still being hammered out. In this way, the report identifies key ways in which national and local government can take the right decisions to benefit both businesses and communities across Kent and Medway.

Dr Amelia Hadfield, co-author of the report, was also interviewed on BBC South East’s TV breakfast news to discuss the report's findings and impact.

Briefing on Kent and 'Brexit'

The Centre for European Studies (CEFEUS) at Canterbury Christ Church University has today released a briefing on the risks associated with British withdrawal from the European Union.

The report summarises the findings of a high-level workshop held at Canterbury Christ Church University on 20 May 2016, convened by the Centre and attended by representatives from different sectors of the local community, including commerce, education, policing, healthcare, transport and local government. The briefing aims to inform citizens in the run-up to the referendum the different effects their choice is likely to have on the region. This is especially important for Kent and Medway, given the intensity of the region’s commercial and political links to the continent and its physical proximity to the French border.
