CEFEUS 1 year anniversary
Friday 11th November saw the first year anniversary of Canterbury Christ Church University’s Centre for European Studies (CEFEUS).
Located within the programme of Politics and International Relations, CEFEUS has undertaken a wide range of activates in this extraordinarily busy year, including; a panel at the inauguration of the centre which discussed the future of Britain’s relationship with Europe, an EU studies fair in collaboration with POLITICO in February and numerous guest speakers throughout the year including the leader of the Liberal Democrat, Tim Fallon.
As such, the event provided the opportunity for reflection and anticipation for what the future might hold, both for CEFEUS itself, and the broader educational and political terrains in Britain itself. The event’s attendee’s included a range of esteemed academics and seasoned professionals. Those who attended include:
Speakers:
Professor Neill Nugent
College of Europe and Manchester Metropolitan University
Dr Mary Murphy
Jean Monnet Chair and Department of Government University College Cork
Dr Uta Staiger
Executive Director, European Institute, University College London
Dr Mark Hammond
Visiting Professor in Public Policy, Canterbury Christ Church University
Mr James Flanagan
Canterbury & Coastal Liberal Democrats
Moderator:
Mr Stephen Fidler
Brussels Bureau Chief, Wall Street Journal
All our speakers had the opportunity to express their opinions on Brexit, how it may affect the United Kingdom and Kent and possible situations that may arise following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union to a full lecture theatre of engaged students, locals and enthusiasts alike.
The entire event was broadcast on social media with the hashtag #CCCUBrexit and was live tweeted from the two CCCU politics accounts; @TheCEFEUS and @CCCUPoliticsIR. All the individuals present were encouraged to tweet in pictures, questions and opinions on the event. We hope that all those who attended enjoyed the evenings speakers and we hope to see you the same time next year with more fantastic news!
