Hadfield gives Parliamentary inquiry evidence

On Wednesday 6th December, Professor Amelia Hadfield appeared in front of the Communities and Local Government Committee in the Houses of Parliament, Westminster.

Speaking after CEFEUS submitted evidence to the Brexit and Local Government Inquiry, she appeared alongside fellow academics Professor Laurence Ferry (Durham University) and Professor Tony Travers (LSE) in addition to Rob Whiteman, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. They were later followed by representatives from local government.

Questions included on how to replace EU funding to local government, the loss of the European Committee of the Regions and the lack of representation from local authorities during the Brexit talks.

Speaking after the oral evidence sessions, Professor Hadfield said ''it was a wonderful opportunity to be able to speak today to MPs about the issues facing local authorities vis-a-vie leaving the European Union. Local Government is reliant on the EU for funding for infrastructure projects and have played a crucial role in shaping legislation in the European Parliament for decades. It is clear that there are significant areas that will need to be addressed as the United Kingdom prepares to depart".

Large sections of her evidence have since been picked up by Room 151.
