Media Distribution
Through the Media Distribution platform, staff and students can record and host video files that they can then distribute to learners, colleagues and peers through the VLE.
This distribution is provided as a streaming service, allowing for immediate playback without the need to download large media files.
What can Kaltura be used for?
- Screencasting - A digital recording of a computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration.
- Sharing in-house created videos - Videos can be uploaded on one Blackboard site and displayed automatically on a course gallery or as an item available within a content area. Once the video has been uploaded once, it can be reused on other Blackboard sites without the need to upload again.
- Video Quizzing – Videos created within Kaltura can also have quiz elements embedded within them. These quizzes will be presented to the viewer at the selected point of the video, pausing the playback until the user answers the question(s) presented. Results from viewer responses are made available to the video owner for review.
- Video Assessment - It is possible for a student to submit a video through the Blackboard assignment manager tool (not to be confused with Turnitin) using the Kaltura video mash-up and for a marker to provide feedback and/or a grade, written directly to that student.
- Student contributions to Blackboard courses - Students can upload videos to a Blackboard course as long as the relevant set-up and permissions are given by a course instructor.
What do I need to access Kaltura?
Course instructors can access Kaltura through the VLE and can choose to set-up their course page so that students are able to access and upload video files.
