From your safety to your insurance, your housekeeping to appliances – we have all your practical accommodation needs covered.

Safety information

Your safety is our priority. Check out the fire safety information in your Accommodation Handbook. Some top tips include:

Keeping yourself and others safe

  • Switch off and unplug all cooking appliances and electrical chargers once you're done.
  • Do not leave devices on charge for long periods of time.
  • Ensure that fire doors are kept closed at all times and communal corridors remain clear and free from obstruction, as they are fire escape routes.
  • Ensure your key or access card is always accessible.
  • No smoking or vaping in your accommodation. This includes illegal substances
  • No tampering with fire safety equipment including fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and covering smoke detection devices, door release systems, and call points.

Prohibited items

  • There are strictly no candles, incense burners, tea/LED, or fairy lights.
  • Deep fat fryers, 3D printers, electric blankets, or non-surge protected extension leads.
  • Possession/use of dangerous or flammable substances. E.g. gases, NO2 canisters, highly flammable liquids, fireworks, BBQs etc.
  • E-scooters, e-bikes, hoverboards (or similar powered transporters). This excludes mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs or equipment for accessibility requirements.
  • Kitchen appliances are not permitted for use or storage within bedrooms and must remain in the kitchen, otherwise they will be confiscated. If any of the above are found in your accommodation, you will be enrolled in a mandatory Fire Awareness Course and receive a warning.

Know the fire evacuation procedures

You should have an escape plan ready in case of a fire. This includes knowing your escape route, the location of the fire assembly point, and alerting the emergency services.

Living on your own for the first time can be exciting, but it’s essential to know how to stay safe when cooking in your kitchen.

Kitchen Safety

We provide detailed safety information in your Accommodation Handbook. Some top tips include:

  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • Do not cook when under the influence of alcohol
  • Keep the oven clear of anything that can catch fire
  • Dispose of rubbish currently and frequently
  • Keep your kitchen clean

Kitchen Appliances

Waste Disposal

Help the University to recycle and be green by using the right bin. Please dispose of and recycle the following items separately:

  • General waste
  • Glass
  • Dry mixed recycling (cardboard, plastics, etc.)
  • Food waste

In the case of serious injury or health concern, you must always consider calling an ambulance in the first instance on 999.

If the injury or health concern is minor, please contact staff for assistance by phoning the Security Helpline number on 01227 922111 or via the Safezone App.

You can also call 111. The NHS 111 service is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by a team of fully trained advisers.

Need help getting started with the electronic appliances in your University accommodation? We’ve got you covered! Click here to access the manuals for the electronic appliances supplied in our University accommodation.

In the first few weeks, it’s common for new students to feel out of place—whether it’s homesickness or not clicking with flatmates right away. These feelings usually improve with time, so we recommend giving yourself a couple of weeks to settle in.

To help everyone adjust, we generally avoid room or flat transfers during the first weeks of term, as most students find they settle in with a little patience.

However, if you’re facing exceptional circumstances, the Accommodation team may be able to help. Feel free to contact us at accommodation@canterbury.ac.uk to discuss your situation.

Move Request

Please complete this form if you would like to request a room move. Move requests are reviewed initially in October and periodically after this. Please note we cannot guarantee a room swap.

If you feel like you are in need of further support, please get in touch with the student support advisers. They are able to provide access to support services and can either be contacted via email, telephone, or by attending one of their drop-in sessions.

Withdrawal Request

Please complete this request form if you’d like to leave your accommodation early and are withdrawing from Canterbury Christ Church University or if you’re formally interrupting your studies.

Losing your keys or access card can be stressful, so it’s a good idea to keep them secure and remove the key tag, which identifies your address.

If you lose your keys/access card, please contact a Security Reception on  01227 922111 immediately.

They’ll be able to help you get a replacement (costing up to £80) and organise changing a lock if necessary (there may be an additional charge).

If you lose a fob for on-site parking, you should also contact a Security Reception. They will help you and advise any costs for a replacement.

See the University Accommodation Licence Agreement for more information about your responsibilities.

At CCCU, we welcome all feedback from our residents and visitors—whether it’s positive or highlights areas for improvement. Your input helps us shape a better accommodation experience for everyone.
