Energy and Governance Group: Workshop 2

Our second Energy and Governance workshop 'EU-Russia Energy Relations: From Repression to Aggression' was held on 14th November 2014 at our Canterbury campus.

Led by Jean Monnet Chair and Senior Lecturer in Politics/IR, Dr Amelia Hadfield, the focal point of discussion surrounded the European Union and Russian Relations, in which well-known experts on the topic proceeded to dissect and debate each topic in a palatable manner.  Our very own Professor Peter Vujakovic, Professor of Geography in the School of Human and Life Sciences at CCCU, and Dr Simon Pirani, Lecturer of Russian History at CCCU as well as an Oxford Energy Studies Senior fellow, all made guest appearances at our behest.

Other speakers included Dr Thomas Sattich from the Global Governance Institute and Dr Tatiana Romanova from St. Petersberg Institute in Russia. The core topics: ‘Geopolitics, governance and energy security’, ‘Russian foreign energy policy: Imperium Redux?’ and ‘The European energy terrain: Fear and Loathing in Brussels?’ really brought to life the debate surrounding the Russian energy scenario.  The conference encouraged collaboration between students and professionals alike over such an exciting and yet contentious topic. This holistic approach to conference allowed for a different lens to view each of the topics, and provided for great discussions following each panel, headed up by Sarah Lieberman of the Politics Department and PhD Candidate Kira Shevchenko of the business school.
