Carl Gower

PhD Student

School: CCCU Business School

Campus: Canterbury

Profile summary

Carl is a part-time University Instructor, and part-time PhD student at Canterbury Christ Church University. After graduating with a First class BSc Hons in Finance (summer 2016), he joined CCCU Business School teaching undergraduates. Carl started his PhD studies in April 2017. He is a member of the Christ Church Business School Athena Swan team.

PHd Focus

Carl’s PhD studies focus on dynamic shrinkage priors for time series analysis. The aim is to identify how the variables affecting economic indicators, such as inflation, and equity premium, change over time. This involves the application of Bayesian methods to select these variables and construct a model that can flexibly change over time.

For his first year review Carl compared the forecasting performance of models produced by frequentist variable selection methods and regularisation, to those produced by Bayesian regularisation. Carl is researching the use of Bayesian priors in a dynamic context, which better suits the changing economic environment. He is currently working on a paper which compares the out-of-sample performance of both static and dynamic shrinkage priors in forecasting equity premium.

Teaching

Carl is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has taught Research Methods to second year students, providing computing classes in R (a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics). R is gaining popularity in practice, especially in the financial sector.

Carl has also taught Business Analysis to first year students, as well as having taught the quantitative analysis sessions for the Research Methods course for the MSc in Business & Management.
