Dr Dikaia Chatziefstathiou (Head of the Research Group) 

 

Dr Dikaia Chatziefstathiou, PhD (Loughborough), MSc (Loughborough), BSc (Thrace), undertook her first degree at the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece before studying at Loughborough University, where she was awarded an MSc with distinction in 2000 and a PhD in 2005. She was appointed Lecturer in the Sociology of Sport at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2005. Today she is a Reader in Olympic Studies and the Social Analysis of Sport.

Phil Hurst

Dr Philip Hurst

 

Philip Hurst is a Senior lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology, at the School of Psychology and Life Sciences. He is an early career interdisciplinary researcher with specialism in placebo effects on sports performance and psychosocial antecedents of anti-doping behaviours. Between 2017 and 2018, Philip worked as a research associate at the University of Birmingham where he undertook two projects commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and International Olympic Committee.

Susan Millns

 

Susan Millns is the Dean of the Graduate College and Professor of Law. She holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Kent (D.Phil.), the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) (Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies; Droit Public Comparé des Etats Européens) and the European University Institute, Florence (LL.M. International, European and Comparative Law).  She taught previously at the University of Liverpool (1991-97)  and the University of Kent (1997-2006) before taking up a Chair in Law at Sussex.  She has held visiting fellowships at the European University Institute (Florence) from 2000-01 as a Jean Monnet Fellow and from 2002-04 as a Marie Curie Fellow in the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.  She was also a visiting professor at the Université Paris Descartes. Professor Millns has worked with a number of organisations, including the Equality and Diversity Forum and New Europeans, to promote the rights of women, sexual minorities and citizens in Europe. This work is particularly linked to her research on the impact of Brexit on UK equality law, human rights law and EU citizens' rights.

Catalina Melendro Blanco 

 

Catalina is from Colombia and is a full-time PhD scholar funded from Canterbury Christ Church University. Her research is about issues of governance and safeguarding in the Global South. She is Passionate and experienced professional with ten years of work in the development field with specific knowledge of sport for development projects, gender equality policies, education strategies, good governance monitoring and evaluation system. She has excelled at building and directing collaborative, cross-cultural teams in both public and private sector by using effective communication and management skills. 
 
In addition to being fully fluent in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, she is familiar with international cultures and contexts, having lived and worked in more than 12 countries. 

 

Kirsty Burrows  

 

Kirsty is Managing Director of Sports Rights Solutions and lead consultant to the International Olympic Committee for Safe Sport. In her capacity as consultant to the IOC, a role she has held since 2016, Kirsty authored the IOC Athlete Safeguarding Toolkit (2017); co-authored the IOC Mental Health in Elite Athletes Toolkit (2021); assumes the role of IOC Deputy Safeguarding Officer at Games-time; and is instrumental in the development and implementation of the IOC's Safe Sport strategy and accompanying initiatives. 

 
Kirsty is an Academic Director of the IOC Certificate: Safeguarding Officer in Sport programme, a member of the Council of Europe’s Pro Safe Sport pool of experts and Safeguarding Consultant for the International Cricket Council. 
 
Her published works include peer-reviewed articles such as “#SafeSport: safeguarding initiatives at the Youth Olympic Games 2018”, published reports, for example “An Overview of the Sport-Related Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Children” and contributions to publications including the Routledge Handbook of Athlete Welfare. 
 
Kirsty holds an International Masters in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, a first class honours degree in Physiotherapy, and is currently studying for a PhD in Athlete Human Rights at Canterbury Christ Church University. 

Alexia Tam  

 

Alexia is Manager of Safe Sport at Alpine Canada and MSc. graduate from Safe Sport Lab at University of Toronto. She has experience as research and teaching assistant while she produced research and publications in relation to #MeToo movement, coaching practices and athletes’ perspectives on power in sexualized experiences between peers in sport. She is studying for a PhD at Canterbury Christ Church University on the socio-cultural dimensions of safeguarding in sport.  

 Yvette Kearns  

Yvette is a lawyer with LLM in International Sports Law and an extensive experience in providing legal counsel across areas of company law, employment law and general counsel negotiation. She also has teaching experience in law schools delivering courses on the English Legal System, European law, International law, contract, tort and criminal law, land law and conveyancing. Currently she is a PhD scholar at Canterbury Christ Church University studying the legal aspects of safeguarding in sport.  

Eva Kisakye   

Eva is from Uganda and is a recent graduate with an MA in sports ethics and integrity as part of the MAISI program in Leuven, Belgium. Her research interests are in safeguarding of children, adults and vulnerable individuals within and around sports as well as safeguarding of the aforementioned in a general sense. She has done research on equality and diversity in sport as well as in a general sense and social responsibility, development, and outreach in sport. She is currently registered for a PhD in Canterbury Christ Church University researching human rights in sports and safeguarding in the Global South, particularly Africa.
