Tourism Management graduate

What are you doing now?

Sales and Marketing Executive for Thames River Services

What does your current role entail?

I currently run the sales and marketing for the 2nd largest sightseeing company on the River Thames. My role entails meeting with new and existing clients, liaising with our creative agencies, in addition to attending trade exhibitions and events. I am responsible for a £100,000 budget.

What were the strengths/highlights of your university course?

One of the highlights of the course was being able to put into practice what we learnt over the first couple of years on the Malta Field Trip. This trip is a great opportunity to put into practice the learning and helps to understand how tourism theory and practical experience fit together.

Why did you choose to study in Canterbury?

As I was studying a tourism degree I wanted to study in a location that had tourism as part of it’s economy. In addition to this when I met the tourism staff I could see how passionate they were about the about the course.

Did your course prepare you adequately for the world of work? How?

The Tourism Management degree gives you a great mix of practical experience combined with classroom learning. The team is lucky enough to be able to draw excellent guest speakers and many of these are key contacts for me in my role today.

How have you drawn on the experience you gained at university in your work today?

I have been able to draw on elements from across my degree and university life in my job today. For example I draw on what I learned about tourism marketing every day as part of my role and recently drew on my accounting experience when I became a trustee of a charity in Greenwich.

Have you completed any further qualifications since you completed your degree?

Not as of yet but I am planning to complete the Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional Diploma in Marketing within the next 18 months.

What are your plans/aspirations for the progression of your career?

I’m currently working my way up to company and within the next 12-18 months I will become Head of Sales & Marketing.

Do you have any advice for current students? (Study, university life or career based)

Take every opportunity that you can whether that be in your degree or university life, I wouldn’t have been able to get the position that I am in already without some of the great contacts I made as part of my degree.
