Read why Charlotte loves studying Applied Criminology at CCCU.

1. The friends I’ve made along the way

Joining CCCU has helped me to gain confidence within myself and make new friends. I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and joined friends in events both within and outside of Uni. I’ve certainly lived the student life to the fullest and I’ve enjoyed every second.

Canterbury is a great place to socialise and make lasting memories, with a vast range of fun activities to do throughout the city. There are so many opportunities to meet new people – through lectures, trips, the Students’ Union, societies, clubs and more - and I am so happy I’ve been a part of it.

2. The events I’ve gotten to go to

Throughout my uni experience, there have been many opportunities for trips and events, both course-specific and in general.

My favourite so far is a trip to watch famous criminologist David Wilson. We listened to his presentation about his time spent working with and interviewing murderers, giving his opinions on the topic from his own experience.

We were able to ask questions to help aid our studies and debated certain topics with him. It was great to speak to someone with such expertise in criminology and to have the opportunity to challenge him as well!

3. Constant feedback throughout our learning

One of the best parts about university has been that we’ve been in control of our learning. Every couple of months we have a session with lecturers, voicing any concerns and discussing solutions, which they relay back to us later.

Our student representatives also gather feedback from us, which is then discussed in meetings with more senior staff. The aim is to improve our student learning experience.

This gives us the space to voice our thoughts and make us active learners in the classroom. I really feel like I’m heard and represented at CCCU.

4. Extracurricular opportunities

There are so many opportunities at CCCU for students looking to expand their horizons and gain more experience, such as taking on student representative and student ambassador roles, volunteering, participating in extra sessions on sign language, Microsoft Office skills, and other workshops. I’ve taken advantage of many of these and expanded my skillset beyond just my degree.

I know that when I graduate from CCCU, I’ll be a well-rounded graduate who is ready to tackle the workplace with the variety of skills and knowledge I’ve acquired throughout my time as a student.

5. Fantastic range of modules and lecturers

Throughout my degree, we’ve covered a range of different topic areas, which has really opened my eyes to future career opportunities and drastically enhanced my understanding of criminology.

Not only will I finish my degree with a deeper understanding of my subject, but I’ll be ready to enter a variety of professions thanks to the emphasis on employability that’s run throughout each year of the course.

What’s more, behind these modules are an incredible team of lecturers who deeply understand their areas of expertise and deliver engaging lectures. You can see the passion that our lecturers have for their subject, which makes our learning experience that much more enjoyable.
