Student Joelle Shares her Experiences of KWU Visit to Canterbury
2nd year student Joelle Temurcin shares her experiences of a visit from Konan Women's University to Canterbury and learning to step outside her comfort zone.
I did not know what to expect of the dementia cafe simulation and thought it would be a fun and interesting activity to develop my understanding of inter cultural nursing practices. I am interested in how different cultures relate and communicate and believe we all have a lot to learn from one another.
I really enjoyed talking with the Japanese students even though at times the conversation was a bit one sided. I learned that the nursing programme in Japan has changed recently to incorporate 2 lessons in English. I think this will help strengthen and benefit international relationships.
I also learned that being open and receptive to trying something new can be daunting and take me out of my comfort zone. However, ultimately it is also very rewarding. I was in charge of assisting the students with scones and we ended up having a lot of fun. I thought this event was a great success.
