Unit 5: Evidence-Based Practice for Assistive Technology

This free online training is aimed at health and social care professionals and trainees and focusses on important knowledge and skills required to be able to critically appraise available evidence for Assistive Technology (AT) and apply it judiciously in their practice. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on best practice in relation to client-centred care and AT solutions, and highlights some of the challenges that exist in this area.

By the end of the Unit, learners will be able to: 

• Understand what is meant by Evidence-Based Practice
• Identify evidence supporting the use of AT in practice from relevant databases using appropriate search tools and techniques
• Critically appraise the evidence using validated tools and frameworks
• Integrate best available evidence into practice using examples from the literature
• Critically reflect on the use of evidence to inform practice and increase awareness of its potential and limitations

The content is accessible via an online platform called Moodle. It should take 1-1.5 hours to complete, and you will not have to complete it all at once. There is a short quiz at the end to test your learning, and an evaluation form to provide feedback. Once you have completed the Unit, you will be issued with a certificate of completion.

Please note, if you have not already completed prior units, you will need to create an account on the e-learning platform. Once you have registered and verified your email address, you will see a message saying that you are not able to enrol on the course. This is because the CCCU ADAPT team need to verify your details before you are granted access to the module. This will usually be done within a couple of hours, but please allow up to two working day to receive an e-mail confirming that your access has been granted (please check your spam/junk folder). If you have completed previous units, you will now have access to Unit 5 when you login to your account.
