Nick Rowe: Plant Science

Nick Rowe completed a 10 week paid internship in Plant Science, investigating the 'Micropropagation of apple cultivars from dormant and growing plant tissue'.

Micropropagation is a process by which seedlings are reared from seeds or vegetative plant tissue under carefully controlled conditions in the laboratory. While the process has the potential to achieve high propogation rates, early attempts to take advantage of this process have resulted in high proportions of undesirable variants.

Working under the supervision of Dr Chris Harvey, Nick worked on developing a new approach to apple micropropagation, using dormant wood and growing shoot tissue as a starting point.

Nick says: 'I really enjoyed my time working on this project. Not only did I help contribute towards the ongoing research at CCCU, but I also gained some valuable skills to add to my C.V.'
