Profile summary

Stephen, first as a member of staff, and now as Visiting Reader, has had a leading role in pioneering sustainability perspectives in academic courses. Stephen has been a member of the Geographical Association (GA) for many years and was its President in 2018-19. He has collaborated with staff in geography over many years and is currently part of the Meaningful Maps team (working with Professor Peter Vujakovic in Geography at Canterbury Christ Church) exploring children's sense of place through their mapping.

He is the author of numerous texts on geography and education, and is a long-term author/consultant for Collins school atlases. Stephen’s research interests focus on teaching and learning and include the environment, sustainability, intercultural understanding, primary school geography and creativity.  He is editor of Teaching Geography Creatively (Routledge 2017) and co-author with Paula Owens of Teaching Primary Geography (Bloomsbury 2016).
