Profile summary

Since being awarded a first class honours degree in Geography by Canterbury Christ Church University and receiving the Clutton’s Prize for Best Geographical Dissertation (2014), Martin has worked as an Instructor at the University, delivering teaching in Cartography, GIS and European Geography across the Geography programme. In 2015, Martin was awarded the British Cartographic Society’s Ian Mumford Award for excellence in original cartographic research.

Research outline

Following a long interest in historical cartography, Martin’s PhD research is centred on the cartographic output of the Military Topographic Directorate of the former Soviet Union, which produced thousands of large and small-scale topographic maps in addition to large-scale plans of towns and cities around the world from the 1940s until its dissolution in 1991. The years immediately following the end of the Cold War saw many of these previously secret maps become available for the first time in research libraries worldwide, although systematic studies of these have yet to be published. Martin’s research examines this historical military mapping programme and explores its potential to inform current methods of international cartographic standardisation by evaluating how the challenges of mapping diverse cultural and physical landscapes were addressed.
