Earlier this academic year, we invited all students on taught courses to take part in the UK-wide 2022/23 digital experience insights survey. Almost 1,000 of you did so, providing us with a wealth of data on how you use, and rate, our digital environment and services.

It's important we demonstrate that we listen to you, so here are six of the key headlines from this year's survey, and how we as a University intend to act upon your feedback.

  • 57% of you said you prefer to be taught mainly on campus, with 35% expressing a preference for a mix of on-campus and online teaching.
  • Around 70% rate the quality of their online learning as ‘Good’ or better – this is a significant increase on just two years ago.
  • Blackboard Ultra received a positive response from your comments, with ease of navigation and its user-friendly interface cited as major plus points.
  • 91% of you regularly use a laptop for studying, and 75% a smartphone – this is far more than the number who use a desktop PC.
  • Over half of you said that the university supports you to use your own devices.
  • Email remains your preferred channel for receiving updates on your course, administrative processes and university facilities.

Your responses to the survey are already informing our planning for the next academic year in terms of digital learning and teaching, IT support and communications. This includes an increase in in-person IT support across all campuses and an investigation into spaces on campus which you've highlighted as having poor wi-fi connectivity.

Plus the findings have been passed on to Faculties and Schools to consider any changes they might want to make as a result – you will be updated on any changes in due course.

Thanks again to the 914 of you who took part in the survey. Your feedback will help us to improve the digital experience for current and future students, and we really appreciate you taking the time to give it.

If you have more to say about our use of digital communications including email, social media and the website, please consider completing our student communications survey which runs until the start of June 2023.
