John Strange Winter is the pseudonym of Henrietta Vaughan Stannard (1856-1911), the bestselling author of over 100 novels whose writing career spanned 1874-1911. Known for her tales of cavalry life, she impressed writer and art critic, John Ruskin with her depiction of the British soldier. Her most famous novel, Bootles Baby, sold over two million copies in ten years. Well-known among literary circles, Stannard was the founding president of the Writers' Club in 1892 and president of the Society of Women Journalists from 1901 to 1903.
