Profile summary

James Perry completed his BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at Canterbury Christ Church University, in 2007. During his undergraduate studies James Perry developed an interest in the beneficial effects of physical activity on health, and its importance for performance athletes and those in the general population.

Keen to apply his knowledge in the field of sport, exercise and physical activity, James Perry studied teaching as part of the Graduate Teacher Training Programme at Canterbury Christ Church University. After achieving Qualified Teaching Status, James Perry taught at both primary and secondary schools whilst simultaneously studying a Master’s Degree in the Exercise Science Field.  The area James Perry specialised in was Paediatric Neuromuscular Training, with a passion for teaching children and a drive to use physical activity to enhance the wellbeing of his students, James Perry applied for and was awarded a full-time scholarship and enrolled on the MPhil/PhD course in 2016. Of particular interest to him was the concept of fun and enjoyment as metrics for engagement in physical activity. James Perry’s research hopes to illustrate that  some exercise specialists display a lack of understanding  of the concept of Physical Literacy. Understanding the underlying principles of Physical Literacy could have a positive impact to those that suffer ill health and obesity, not just in the paediatric populations but throughout the life’s course. Creating a love of learning, both physical activity, embodied learning, and traditional academic learning should be encouraged as something that should continue throughout our lives.
