Prime Ministerial Accountability

This one year research project investigates the accountability of the Prime Minister to Parliament through Liaison Committee evidence sessions. The research, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, seeks to investigate how effective these sessions are and how they work to hold the Prime Minister to account. This project will make a significant contribution to our understanding of both the limits and the possibilities of democratic accountability mechanisms in the UK.

About us

We will work closely with parliamentary clerks and MPs, in order to assess their accountability contribution, and provide recommendations for how their levels of scrutiny might be improved.

The Liaison Committee

The House of Commons Liaison Committee is made up of the Chairs of each of the select committees, and has a wide ranging role in holding the Prime Minister to account.
