Events

As part of our Jean Monnet funding award, we are able organise special events including field trips, guest lectures and other activities to enhance our teaching on Europe.

Trip to Brussels

Politics Jean Monnet-funded trip to Brussels

In March 2015, students and staff took part in a two-day trip to Brussels, funded by Jean Monnet. This trip formed part of the third year Quo Vadis (EU Foreign Affairs) module taught by Dr Amelia Hadfield, and the second year European Political Economy module taught by Dr John Fitzgibbon. While in Brussels, students met with members of the European Parliament, the European External Action Service, and even visited the Russian Embassy. You can find out more about this trip by reading Sara Martone's blog:  'A field trip to remember: personal reminiscences of our Jean Monnet-funded trip to Brussels' .

EU-US relations with Bill Jamieson

Bill Jamieson

In March, third-year students on the Politics/IR course on EU foreign affairs (Quo Vadis 2) were privileged to welcome Mr William (Bill) Jamieson, a long-time political observer and commentator of EU-US relations. Invited by long-time friend and colleague, Dr Amelia Hadfield, Bill provided the class with keen and personal insights into the Obama Administration, TTIP, EU attitudes, the youth demographic, and EU-US foreign policy developments. The resulting Q&A was interactive, stimulating and memorable. We’re grateful to have had Bill visit CCCU, and look forward to supporting a future visit, under the aegis of Jean Monnet.

Bringing in European expertise

As part of our Jean Monnet award we have invited several prominent guest lecturers to share their expertise with our students. In November, Deputy Head of the China Division at the EU External Action Service (EEAS) Mr George Cunningham visited the University to take part in two of our European modules: 'European Strategic Culture', led by Dr Amelia Hadfield, and 'EU: Power, Politics and Integration', led by Dr John Fitzgibbon.

Using his many years of experience, George brought a tremendous degree of real-world diplomatic knowledge and practical information into how the EU works at the highest level. He also gave an insightful account of the day-to-day work of the EEAS, and the foreign policy challenges currently facing the EU more generally.
