Projects and conferences

COaST undertakes projects on behalf of local organisations and arts institutions.

Our clients have included:

 turner-570x320

Understanding audiences

We helped Turner Contemporary understand their audiences by designing and managing their audience survey. This rolling survey gives the Gallery a robust insight into who visits, their motivations, and how they feel about the exhibitions they see.

Social Value Reporting

We used the Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology to measure and report on the social impact of Turner Contemporary in Margate and Thanet. The findings of this important research were presented in the Houses of Parliament in 2016.

Generating audience insights in hard-to-reach communities

investigation station160
Waterman’s Arts Centre outdoor performance space in Bell Square, West London,we designed and built the ‘investigation station’ as a way of collecting audience responses at live outdoor arts events. Participants insert tokens into slots and these are sorted and collected automatically for future analysis by the researcher. The trolley is designed to blend in with theatrical events. We also used time lapse photography to capture the movements of the audience through space and to give our client insights into the dynamics of outdoor events.

Understanding the motivations for theatre attendance

We are working with the Gulbenkian and Marlowe theatres in Canterbury to better understand the reasons why people choose not to go the theatre. Through surveys and reviews of current research we are able to give these venues an insight into the decision making process of their audience, and help them with their planning and development work.

Building cultural capacity in coastal communities

COaST helped to develop White Horses Whitstable, a unique arts collaboration between the artist Tracey Falcon, Christ Church University and Whitstable Yacht Club. Working together we created a spectacular exhibition of floating art that has since toured the area. The project investigated the ways that artists & arts organisations from the East Kent region could come together with professionals from the public, private, community and voluntary sectors to investigate new opportunities for collaboration.

The Prosper project was commissioned by the Canterbury Festival, and designed and produced by The Map Consortium and Workers of Art and funded by the Arts Council England.

 Conferences

There have been two COaST academic conferences, attended by key academics and stakeholders working in this field. Each conference featured presentations by both academics and practitioners dealing with the relationships between the arts and place. View the legacy website of the 2014 conference, Seascapes: The Cultural Life of Seaside Towns.
