Periodic Course Review

This page covers the principles for review, timelines and documentation requirements. It provides an overview of the review process and what to expect at the review event.

All courses must undergo Periodic Course Review every six years. The purpose is to review curriculum content to ensure it is stil current, meets subject benchmark standards and continues to provide a good student experience.

Further information on the process and requirements of periodic review is detailed in the documents below:

Periodic Course Review typically takes place between November to March each year. The Quality and Standards Office will liaise with Faculties to establish the dates for Standing Approval Panels for any course undergoing review. These will be confirmed by the Faculty Registrar in line with faculty portfolio planning activities.

Courses must typically be considered by the Standing Approval Panel at least 6 months before the new approved version is set to start.

The full set of documentation for periodic course review should be submitted to the Faculty Quality Office 4 weeks in advance of the Standing Approval Panel. Course documentation submitted outside of this timeframe will likely result in delays to the Standing Approval Panel, which in turn will have a knock on effect for approval and any new course data being communicated to the University's central student records, marketing and admissions teams. The full set of documentation required is highlighted below and templates are located in the Course Development section.

All courses undergoing periodic review require external scrutiny from an External Advisor to confirm that the course and learning outcomes continue to align with acdemic benchmarks and where necessary Professional Statutory Regulatory Body (PSRB) standards, and tht the curriculum for each module is appropriate to the course and the award title.

It is permitted, but not required, that the External Examiner may be used for this role. A fee of £150 will be paid for this additional work. It is the responsibility of the course team to liaise with their external examiner / external advisor to ensure that the external scrutiny is carried out. The formal External Advisor report template is located in the Submitting Documentation section above.

The Quality and Standards Office will organise all Standing Approval Panels, including membership, the final dates of which will be communicated to course teams by their Faculty Quality teams.
