Christ Church continues to work towards promoting racial equity in Higher Education, Black History Month provides the opportunity to pause, reflect, build collective solidarity and celebrate the contributions that individuals from the Black community make to our society.

Last year the University adopted a 365 approach (BH365) in acknowledgment that the Black community should be celebrated and appreciated throughout the year, not just in the month of October, and that Black History is very much a part of our history. The University is committed to continuing this approach for the forthcoming year.

The national theme for Black History is ‘Proud to Be’.

The University is hosting a series of webinars and activities that will include guest speakers from the Black community, Allies and pioneers in racial equity.

Confirmed speakers include:

Dame Elizabeth Anionwu

Dr Gurnam Singh

Dorcas Boamah

Natasha Brown

Bernadette Hawkes

BH365 provides a strong opportunity to continue to prioritise the University's Closing Our Gap strategic commitments and an opportunity for the University community and wider communities to engage positively with Black history, act in the present and work towards building a better future for all by bringing staff and students from all racial and ethnic background on a transformative journey.

Being a Black woman is something that I am immensely proud of. Everyone has the right to a quality, inclusive and diverse education that gives them the opportunity to thrive and reach their career aspirations.

“We know education has the power to change and transform lives, increase mobility and empower individuals to make positive contributions to society.

“I look forward to celebrating Black history, not just throughout the month of October, but all year round.
