There’s a reason why Canterbury is visited by millions of people every year. With its beautiful buildings, rich history, and luscious green spaces, living in Canterbury as a student offers so much more than just studying.

Whether you’re completely new to the area or you’re a local wanting to explore further, here are six things to do in Canterbury, Kent.

1. Explore Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury Cathedral has to be one of the most iconic landmarks in our beautiful city. This historic building isn’t just any old church – it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with centuries of history and awe-inspiring architecture.

Take a stroll through its hallowed halls, marvel at the stunning stained-glass windows, and soak in the serene atmosphere. And to make your trip even sweeter, it's free entry for students.

What’s more, as a CCCU student, you’ll be graduating in this amazing Cathedral, making your student experience that much better.

2. Chill out in Westgate Gardens

If you need a breather from studying, then head over to Westgate Gardens for some much-needed R&R. This tranquil green space is the perfect spot to relax, soak up the sun, and clear your head.

Stroll along the River Stour or go punting to experience Canterbury’s beautiful nature on the water.

As a student, you might find yourself being stuck inside surrounded by books, computer screens, and coffee a lot. So, it’s lucky that all of our students have the option to escape to our fairy tale-like gardens in the city.

3. Pop to the market at the Goods Shed

If you’re a real foodie, then the Goods Shed will be your perfect place to shop and eat. This vibrant indoor market is packed with local goodies, from fresh produce and artisanal crafts to gourmet treats and mouth-watering food.

If you want a freshly baked sourdough or want to treat yourself to some light lunch and a cocktail, then the Goods Shed is the place to head to.

You might even be able to get a cheeky student discount with your student card.

4. Get creative at The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge

If you love to surround yourself in history, art, and culture then you’ll love The Beaney. This cultural hotspot boasts a treasure trove of exhibitions, galleries, and interactive displays guaranteed to feed your curious mind.

Plus, with regular workshops and events on offer, there’s always something new to discover.

What’s more, if you want to use their free, resource-rich library then you can do so. Entry is free and it’s super easy to get to as it’s right in the middle of the High Street.

5. Experience the buzzing student nightlife

Canterbury’s High Street is filled with bars, pubs, and clubs, perfect for student nights out. Whether you’re a social butterfly or looking for some culture, there’s always something going on in the city.

What’s more, the CCSU’s societies are always planning student gatherings, offering you the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the evening without spending too much money.

Check out the Canterbury Nightlife Guide for things that you can do and find out about societies that you can join in the Students’ Union.

6. Practise your board game skills

Whether you haven’t rolled the dice since you were a kid or you’re still an avid board game player, there are plenty of board game nights to choose from around Canterbury. It’s a great time to meet new people, catch up with friends, and get nostalgic with a classic game of Operation.

The Long Rest, a café in the city centre, has a huge collection of games that will cater to everyone’s gaming level. And you can grab a bite to eat whilst you’re at it.

If you’re a diehard fan of D&D or Magic the Gathering, then you can head to Dice & Destiny in The King’s Mile where there are regular evening and special events.

Other places that offer board games and events include Stag Coffee & Kitchen and The Thomas Beckett pub. There’s so much choice to choose from, you’ll never get bored of the board.
