Read Anna's five tips for how to apply through Clearing.

Psychology student Anna applied through Clearing not once, but twice. Through her experience, she learned a lot about herself. She also had time to figure out what and where she truly wanted to study.

It also taught her about the the Clearing process itself, making her the perfect person to give us some advice for when it comes to applying to university through Clearing.

Here are the top five tips Anna has for any prospective Clearing students:

1. Be mentally prepared

Going through Clearing doesn't mean you've failed. It's natural to feel stressed, worried and even anxious.

But think of your current situation as an opportunity to really know what you want. This way, you can be sure with the university and the course that you're choosing.

Mentally prepare yourself for making a decision that will impact the next three years of your life.

2. Remember you’re not alone

Universities are always prepared for a few tears when going through Clearing. Don't feel conscious if you call the Clearing phoneline a little emotional. The Clearing team at CCCU is friendly and knowledgeable, and they receive training to assist you through the application process. They'll try their best to help you find the right course.

When I started university, I didn't realise how many students had applied through Clearing. There were a lot of us in the same position, which instantly gave me a support network.

Remember, you're not alone. Many other students will have had similar experiences to you.

3. Make sure you love the location and the course

There's nothing worse than going to a university miles away from home and hating it.

Make sure you study the city, fall in love with the area and get involved in societies at the Students' Union. These are great ways to form friendships and introduce yourself to university life and the student experience.

Thankfully, Canterbury is a beautiful city full of heritage and character. This vivid and vibrant place is perfect for students wanting to feel a part of a wider community.

4. Clearing does not mean failure

I thought going into Clearing meant that you'd failed, but it’s a second chance at finding the university for you!

Even though I dropped out of my first Clearing choice, I am now a successful undergraduate on placement, working with other professionals in my chosen field.

Going through Clearing doesn't mean that you will have any missed opportunities. Choosing the right course through Clearing will still give a fulfilling student experience.

5. Don’t fixate on league tables

League tables are just a figure of satisfaction. This isn't a measure of excellence. Every university provides endless opportunities, just like Canterbury Christ Church did for me.

When choosing a university, it's important that it feels right for you. Feeling comfortable at university is crucial for a better student life. It's better to be at a university where you feel at home rather than one where you don't feel comfortable.

It’s important to remember, we cannot become what we want by remaining what we are. Every expert was once a beginner.
