More than sixty professionals and entrepreneurs across Kent and Medway came together this month at the new £65 million Verena Holmes Building for the inaugural Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) collaborative event.

This first festive networking event gathering of the season provided the perfect opportunity for local organisations learn more about:

  • The Federation of Small Businesses and the benefits of joining
  • The government-funded ‘Help to Grow: Management Scheme
  • The array of business services available at the University

Guest speakers included Tim Aker, Development Manager at Federation of Small Businesses, Christ Church’s Jack Bidewell, SME Development Manager,Kate Keane, Senior Lecturer in Work-based Learning, Postgraduate and Professional at Christ Church Business School and Abbie Kempe, Director of Enterprise and Engagement.

Speaking about the event, Jack Bidewell commented: "With a clear remit to support our local and regional economy, we are delighted to welcome SMEs to our campus to network and find out more about the government-supported ‘Help to Grow Management scheme’ we will soon be offering at Christ Church," he said. 

"Partnering with a like-minded and supportive organisation such as the FSB, enables us to reach a wide audience and promote the great service offerings we have available for local businesses." 

Harry Dance, Digital Marketing Director at Kayo Digital. added: “We really enjoyed the event, especially the informal and comfortable atmosphere enabling easy communication and the generation of new business connections. 

“We were able to grow our professional network, absorb lots of helpful information and ideas geared towards small businesses in an informal way. We’ll definitely be back.”

Tim Aker, Development Manager of Federation of Small Businesses in Kent and Medway commended the partnership. He said: “FSB is delighted to be working with Canterbury Christ Church University. Many FSB members have already taken advantage of their expertise and resources to help their businesses. This is a strong partnership that will develop in 2023 to help all Kent’s SMEs and see that they have the support they need."

Christ Church offers an array of business services with access to new skills and talent of its students and graduates, insight and innovation including specialist or event facilities, and the opportunity to join other businesses in regional initiatives and partnerships.
