TEL Systems Developer

Profile summary

I joined the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Team in 2014 after spending three years working in a range of roles across the University, from Human Resources to the Teach First programme. In each role I was able to see first-hand a variety of the needs and use cases that staff and students have for the tools which make up the University’s Learning Platform Suite.

In the role of TEL Systems Developer I am a system administrator for Blackboard and the tools that it comprises – ensuring that these systems stay current, secure, and are well tested. I oversee and design general elements for the service that all users have access to, such as the ‘Home’ page and other tabs, and have introduced a number of new elements to the design that have been influenced by my time as a general user. Each year, I work to ensure that Blackboard and its tools are updated successfully, including working on customisation and communication.

Working with the Faculty Learning Technologists I am often involved in a range of projects that are directly tailored to each of the respective faculties, as well as consulting on technical requirements. In addition, I work alongside the i-zone and IT Service Desk to provide specialist second-line support to students and staff.

In the last couple of years I have also worked closely on designing and implementing online learning resources for staff as part of the Learning Technology Team’s “12 TELs of Christmas” and “The Canterbury TELs” events – often through highlighting online tools and services available to staff to enhance their learning and teaching practice, as well as championing the in-built, ready-to-use elements of better Blackboard course design.
