Profile summary

I joined Learning and Teaching Enhancement in July 2020. I am Programme Director for the PGCAP and UCAP and an assessor, reviewer and mentor for Access HE fellowship applicants on the MAP:HE. Another key element of my role is supporting and promoting learning excellence, enhancing the student experience and aiding staff in developing excellent learning and teaching practice.

My background is in English for Academic Purposes and I have been a tutor, manager and course developer across a diverse range of programmes and working with academic schools and departments on projects and initiatives. Throughout my career in higher education I have developed my skills and interests in staff development and mentoring, and best practice in higher education. My pastoral experience as a Senior Tutor/ Designated Safeguarding Officer at the University of Kent has also given me an empathetic insight into the problems and difficulties students can face during their studies in higher education and the drive to find solutions to best equip them to succeed in their studies.

I am particularly interested in what constitutes good academic practice, teaching students to avoid plagiarism and achieving a standardised approach in how universities approach plagiarism.  In my previous role at the University of Kent, I was awarded a Teaching Excellence Small Support Award to design an online Academic Integrity module for students as well as a training module for staff. This is an area I am keen to continue supporting and developing at CCCU.

I hold a Masters in English Language Teaching (Applied Linguistics) and a Masters in Texts in History (Literature), both from the University of Reading, a Professional Diploma in Management from the University of Leicester and the Diploma TESOL from Canterbury Christ Church University. I have been teaching in higher education in the UK and China since 2001.

I am a Senior Fellow of Advance H.E.

Additionally, I am a reviewer for the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education and an External Examiner for International Foundation Programmes and Graduate Diploma at both the University of Sussex and Glasgow Caledonian University.
