Academic Calendars 2024/25

Most courses are structured in line with one of the Academic Calendars listed below. This means that similar types of course share the same key dates, e.g. welcome week for new students, teaching start and finish dates, and the period during which students take their end-of-module exams/assessments.

The Calendar for your course depends on various factors, including whether you are an Undergraduate or Postgraduate, if your course includes placements or you are an Apprentice, and so on.

Most Undergraduate courses adhere to the University’s ‘Semesters’ Academic Calendar.

On this Calendar, each year of study is divided into two blocks of 15 weeks. The 15 weeks comprise:

  • 12 weeks for acquiring and consolidating knowledge and skills followed by
  • 1 week for revision followed by
  • 2 weeks during which you'll take your end-of-Semester assessments/exams.

Reassessments****

This Academic Calendar is typically used for courses that have a longer academic year to meet external professional requirements. These are primarily in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care and the School of Teacher Education.

The second of these 15-week blocks is then followed by a further five weeks of professional learning.

Further information

*Welcome week

This week is for students who are starting at the university, progressing to a new course of study or transitioning from a foundation year. It gives you a chance to meet students and tutors on your course before teaching on your modules begins, plus you’ll learn more about your student timetable including which groups you’re in for seminars (where applicable). You’ll discover different ways we support you and the opportunities to join the wider community through activities like the Students’ Union Freshers’ Fayre. For all these reasons, it’s really important that new students attend their Welcome Week.

**Academic development/study weeks

In study weeks, there is generally no timetabled teaching, to give you time to consolidate your learning and academic skills and/or prepare for assessments or placements. You might meet with your personal academic tutor to get advice on the next steps you need to take to achieve your full potential, explore study support on offer to you like the Library or the Learning Skills Hub or access wider development opportunities such as volunteering and peer mentoring.

Your Course team will tell you if any activities scheduled during study weeks are mandatory. If you are on a Student Route visa, please remember that it’s important you attend all mandatory timetabled activities as they count towards your attendance record.

***Personal development week

This is a dedicated week involving focussed activities that will develop your wider skills, enhance your employability and prepare you for your future career.

****Reassessments

If you don’t pass all your modules at the first attempt, you may be given the opportunity to undertake reassessment. Your Board of Examiners will confirm when this will take place.

  • For students on Semester-based courses, this could be in the period between the end of the current academic year and the start of the next one or during the next academic year (with attendance).
  • For Postgraduate students this will be in the next Trimester (for Trimester 3 modules, reassessments will take place during the first Trimester of the following academic year).

For more information about reassessments, see your University student guides (Undergraduate and Postgraduate).

Which calendar is which?

The University's Academic Calendars are:

  • SEMESTERS (referred to in MyRecord as SEM (15WK)): Most Undergraduate courses follow the University’s ‘Semesters’ Calendar. Each year of study is divided into two blocks of 15 weeks, each comprising 12 weeks for acquiring and consolidating knowledge and skills, one week to revise and two weeks for end-of-Semester assessments/exams.
  • SEMESTERS WITH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING BLOCK (referred to in MyRecord as SEM (15WK PLB)): This calendar is typically used for courses that have a longer academic year to meet external professional requirements. These are primarily courses in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care, and those in the School of Teacher Education. Each year of study is divided into two blocks of 15 weeks, each comprising 12 weeks for acquiring and consolidating knowledge and skills, one week to revise and two weeks for end-of-Semester assessments/exams. The second of these 15-week blocks is then followed by a further five weeks of professional learning.
  • TRIMESTERS (referred to in MyRecord as TRIMSTR (15WK)): Typically used for Postgraduate Taught Degrees. Each year of study on this academic calendar is divided into three blocks of 15 weeks, comprising 12 weeks for acquiring and consolidating knowledge and skills, one week to revise and two weeks for end-of-Trimester assessments/exams. The nature of assessments/exams on these courses mean that the third and final Trimester extends part-way into the following week.
  • 12-WEEK TRIMESTERS (referred to in MyRecord as either 12WK (LONG) or 12WK (EQUAL)): This calendar is for Undergraduate courses which are taught in Trimesters and students progress from one academic year to the next. It is also the academic calendar for employment-based courses, i.e. foundation degrees and apprenticeships, where students typically attend one day a week. Courses on this Calendar are delivered in three blocks of 12 weeks, each comprising 10 weeks of learning & teaching, one week to revise and one week of assessments/exams.

Most courses in 2024/25 will align to one of these four academic calendars, although there will be some exceptions.
