Reassessment

If you don’t pass all your modules and progress to your next level of study at the first attempt, in most cases you will be offered the chance to undertake reassessment.

Reassessment provides you with a further opportunity to take and pass an assessment activity that you’ve attempted but not passed. There’s no stigma attached to reassessment, and many students who re-take an exam or are asked to submit an alternative piece of work go on to complete their award with the grades they wanted. (However, in some cases it may impact on the timeliness of your progression to your next level of study.)

When your results are released and you receive your Academic Summary, always check the ‘Outcome of the Examination of your Work’, even if you think you know what the results will be, to double-check whether you need to take any further action. If you need to undertake further assessment on any of your modules, instructions will be included.

You’ll normally undertake reassessment by submitting an improved form of your original work or taking another examination with different questions on the same subject in the period between the current academic year ending and the next one starting. However, in certain circumstances you might be offered Progression with Trail and Progress or Reassessment with Attendance.

Reassessment and Graduation

If you are required to take a reassessment to complete your studies...

You should expect that your graduation ceremony will be at a later date than if you complete without reassessment.

Important to note

If you undertake a reassessment, your mark for that reassessment activity is capped at the pass mark. This includes any deferred reassessment attempts.

Progression with Trail and Progress

Progression with Trail and Progress is when you are permitted to start your next level of study whilst undertaking reassessment for a module(s) that you’ve not yet passed.

If you’re offered trail and progress, please be aware of all of the following:

  • You should speak to your Course Team or personal academic tutor (PAT) about any offer you have received for trail and progress – they’ll be able to answer any questions you may have (or direct you to someone who can). If you're unsure who your PAT is, your Course Team will be able to help.
  • To confirm your intention to accept the offer of trail and progress, re-register for your next year of study when invited to do so.
  • Do not attend lectures, seminars or other taught activities on the module that is being reassessed. (For this reason, you won’t see this module(s) on your individual student timetable.)
  • You must undertake your trail and progress reassessment at the specified time(s), otherwise it will impact your opportunities for completion of your award or further progression.
    • If you are on a Semester-based Academic Calendar, this will normally be during Academic Development Week of the following academic year.
    • If you are on a Trimester-based Calendar, this will normally be at the end of the 1st Trimester of the following academic year.
  • There are no additional fees associated with trail and progress, and no impact on your potential student funding.
  • In the unfortunate event that you do not pass the trailed credits in Semester 1 or Trimester 1, you’re encouraged to continue with your studies for the current academic year. Your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) will be able to provide guidance on your next steps, although you may not be eligible to progress or may only be eligible for an alternate award as – to be eligible for your full award – you will need to pass your trailed credits.
  • By re-registering for the next academic year when invited to do so, you are indicating that you understand all of the above.

Reassessment with Attendance (including important financial information)

Reassessment with Attendance is when you are required to re-attend taught activities for module(s) you’ve already studied but not passed. This is to ensure you have sufficient learning to complete your reassessment successfully. You will be charged fees for reassessment with attendance, so make sure you plan your finances accordingly as there could be implications for your funding if the modules you’re re-taking do not span the entire academic year.

If you’re offered reassessment with attendance, please be aware of all of the following:

  • Speak to your Course Team or personal academic tutor (PAT) about any offer you have received for reassessment with attendance – they’ll be able to answer any questions you may have (or direct you to someone who can).
  • To confirm that you want to accept the offer of reassessment with attendance, re-register for your next year of study when invited to do so.
  • Once you have re-registered, your student record will be updated for the next year of study, and your Course Team will allocate you to any classes you need to attend meaning they will be displayed on your individual student timetable (where applicable).
  • You will be liable for tuition fees for any modules you re-take as reassessment with attendance, although at a reduced rate (75% of the standard fee). Most students are eligible for a tuition fee loan for reassessment with attendance, but it depends on your circumstances and the number of years’ tuition fee funding you have already received. Please talk to your student loan provider (e.g. Student Finance England) for further information.
  • Once you’ve decided to accept the offer of reassessment with attendance, you must notify your funding provider (e.g. Student Finance England). You will only be eligible for funding for the full year if you are re-taking modules in both semesters or all three trimesters (dependent on your Academic Calendar) otherwise your funding will be proportionate to the period that you repeat. The University will be asked to confirm the start and end date of your repeat period to Student Finance and if necessary your loan will be recalculated. Please ensure you double check the funding you will receive for your reassessment with attendance year. If you need any further guidance or advice, please contact a student support adviser
  • If you are an UG Healthcare student in receipt of funding via the NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF), please note:
    • If you are undertaking reassessment with attendance for one or more academic modules, you generally won’t be eligible for any support from the NHS LSF for your repeat period. On successful completion of the reassessment with attendance period, you can re-apply for NHS LSF funding for your next period of study.
    • There may be some exemptions to the above rule, for example if you are  completing delayed practice hours as a result of COVID-19 practice placement. Contact canterbury-healthadmin@canterbury.ac.uk to check whether this applies to you.
  • By re-registering for the next academic year when invited to do so, you are indicating that you understand all of the above.

If you wish to withdraw from your studies rather than accept the offer of reassessment, or take a break from your studies while you consider your next steps, you should seek advice and talk through your options with your personal academic tutor (PAT). Support is also available from the student support advisers.

If you decide to take a break (formally known as interrupting) or withdraw from your studies, you must meet certain conditions, including deadline dates for making these changes. You will need to confirm your decision by completing a changes to study request.

If you’re unsure why you have been unable to progress or complete your award and have instead been offered reassessment, the guide to assessment and award processes – Undergraduate or Postgraduate version – provides some possible scenarios. Your Course/Module Handbook will set out any other requirements that are specific to you.

If there is anything you are unsure about, or if you would like advice or support, contact your personal academic tutor (PAT). Alternatively, contact the i-zone if you have any queries about reassessments in general.
