Welcome

Welcome to BEng Building Services Engineering at Canterbury Christ Church University. We are pleased to welcome you to the School of Engineering, Technology and Design and look forward to supporting you as you begin your studies.

Building Services Engineering focuses on the systems that make buildings safe, comfortable, efficient and sustainable, including HVAC, lighting, power, water, controls and building performance. Throughout the course, you will develop the specialist engineering knowledge and practical skills needed for future roles in the building services sector of the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

During Welcome Week, you will meet your course team, fellow students and Personal Academic Tutor (PAT). You will also complete key induction activities, including introductions to university systems, learning spaces, laboratories, workshops, health and safety procedures, PPE guidance and support services.

We look forward to meeting you during Welcome Week and helping you make a strong start to your Building Services Engineering journey.

Getting started

Your Course

The academic year at Canterbury Christ Church University is split into two semesters:

  • Semester 1 runs from September to January
  • Semester 2 runs from late January to May

During your first year on BEng Building Services Engineering, you will study four modules that introduce you to core engineering principles, design practice, applied mathematics, systems, materials and practical problem-solving.

Semester 1

  • Integrated Design and Professional Practice led by Dr Salman Saeidlou

  • Applied Mathematics and Programming led by Dr Atif Rasheed

Semester 2

  • Integrated Electro-Mechanical Systems and Practices led by Dr Soumya Manna

  • Material Science and Testing led by Dr Atif Rasheed

Teaching and Learning Approach

Teaching is delivered mainly on campus through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, practical sessions, laboratory activities and computer-based learning. You will take part in problem-solving tasks, group work and hands-on activities that link engineering theory to real building services applications.

Virtual Learning Environment

You will use Blackboard as your main learning platform. This is where you will access lecture materials, module handbooks, assignment briefs, submission links, reading lists and important announcements. You may also use Microsoft Teams for communication, online meetings, group discussions and additional support sessions. Please check Blackboard and your CCCU email regularly.

First Few Weeks and Equipment

The first few weeks are designed to help you settle into university study and become familiar with our laboratories, workshops, IT systems and learning environments. You will be introduced to your modules, teaching team, assessment expectations, health and safety procedures, and the digital tools you will use during the course.

The department provides access to the main specialist software and equipment needed for your studies. Many software packages can be accessed through the University’s IT systems or Virtual Desktop, so you do not need to purchase a high-performance laptop. A reliable device with internet access will normally be sufficient for accessing Blackboard, Microsoft Office and remote learning resources.

You are advised to have basic stationery, notebooks or digital note-taking tools, and a scientific calculator. Any specialist PPE or workshop/laboratory requirements will be explained during induction and module sessions.

Your welcome and induction will be w/c 14 September 2026. We look forward to meeting you then.

Your Must Do Tasks

Once you have been invited to register for your course, there are some key tasks you'll need to complete to make sure you are ready to become a CCCU student.

Registration invitations are sent towards the end of August. We'll send yours to the email address you used when you applied, so please check this inbox regularly to make sure you don't miss any important information.

Pre-course reading

Detailed reading lists for each module and the course will be provided during Welcome Week and will be included in your module handbooks. However, here is some reading and visual recommendations that may give you a further insight into engineering and how it has changed the world:
