In the 1980s curator Sandra Drew staged a series of ground-breaking exhibitions in locations around Canterbury. Drew Gallery Projects supported artists in the early stages of their careers, often experimenting with ‘new media’ which didn’t resemble what was broadly accepted as sculpture at the time. To coincide with a new exhibition celebrating this legacy and the creation of a digital archive of the projects, we are thrilled to host this associated event. David Mach, who made new works for ‘Sculpture on the Map’ (1984) and ‘Sculptors at Work’ (1985), and Laura Ford who created a new commission for ‘Third Generation: Women Sculptors Today’ (1986), will discuss their experiences working in Canterbury, the activation of public spaces through art, and how these early experiences informed their subsequent works.
