Our Business Foundation Year is a direct entry point to one of our business-related undergraduate degrees, such as marketing, business management or accountancy and finance. The foundation year is ideal for those who are looking at an alternative route into higher education, or who wish to update or broaden their knowledge before progressing onto a full undergraduate degree. The course aims to help you develop a strong foundation of business knowledge, alongside academic and transferable skills to ensure you get the most out of your degree-level studies.

Good management is at the heart of every successful organisation. All of our business programmes are practical in nature and from day one you will start to build your knowledge and understanding of organisations, the environments in which they operate, and how they are managed.

Designed to prepare you for general management, this course is particularly suitable if you are looking for a role in the service, retail or public sectors. You will study business from a strategic viewpoint and examine real-life organisational problems, making use of the strong links between Christ Church Business School and a wide range of local, regional and national organisations, and gaining real-world knowledge and experience.

The Foundation Year prepares you for Level 4 study in a variety of business and law programmes, while giving you a strong cross-disciplinary grounding in these subjects. On successfully completing the Foundation year, you are not only equipped for further study in your chosen subject, but have a good interdisciplinary understanding of Business and Law more generally that will when you begin the first year of your degree programme. The Foundation Year also gives you experience of applying what you study to the solution of real-world problems. In this way, it gives you the necessary skills for further academic study, inquiry and problem-solving, and helps you become an independent learner.

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year in Business and Law you will progress to your three-year degree, designed to prepare you for general management. All our business degrees are essentially practical in nature. You will receive relevant knowledge and understanding of organisations, the external environment in which they operate and how they are managed. The inter-relationships among and the integration of these areas will form part of your overall student learning experience.

Assessments include a range of methods but do not feature formal examinations. You can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of business ethics and demonstrate the relevance of ethics in business.

On the Foundation Year all students study five core modules: Contemporary Issues in Business, Management and Marketing, Contemporary Issues in Law, Individual Project, Communication and Academic Skills for HE and Personal and Career Development. In addition to this Business students will study Contemporary Issues in Accounting, whilst Law students will study an Introduction to Law module.

These modules will introduce you to key concepts, skills and ideas in the disciplines of Business and Law by exploring key current issues and engaging you in lively debates.

We are proud that our students have been finalists a number of times in the national IBM Business Challenge.

Having gained a grounding in each subject area you will then undertake a supervised ‘Individual Project’ investigating a particular topic within your chosen subject area. This module is designed to prepare you for further study at Level 4 within your chosen subject-specific degree pathway.

The Foundation Year will enable you to attain all the basic transferable skills you need to undertake research, reflect on your learning, and communicate effectively in speech, writing and other formats, giving you the confidence to study in Higher Education. 

The first year is common to all business programmes and introduces you to some of the main themes of the programme. There is also a module designed to make sure you are familiar with the skills, techniques and computer software you will be using both at university and beyond.

In year two the exact combination of core and optional modules depends on your chosen degree. The final year involves studying business aspects from a more strategic viewpoint. You will also have the opportunity to examine a real-life organisational problem. A wide range of local, regional and national organisations from across the region support us in doing this.

Our graduates have moved on to very exciting and challenging jobs in the private as well as public sector, in the UK and abroad. Their employers include Google, Apple, KPMG, HSBC and the NHS.

We are a diverse school; our students and staff come from a variety of backgrounds and places. In order to provide our students with a diversity of learning experiences, we maintain close links with a variety of European universities. Our students have the opportunity to complete one semester or one year of their studies at one of these institutions in English language within the framework of the Erasmus programme.

Work experience

You can opt to do a one year long work placement, in addition to your three year academic studies.  Whilst it is the responsibility of the student to secure a placement, there is a School based placement officer and Unitemps office to help.

Also, the Problem Orientated Project in year three provides you with an excellent opportunity to gain real life experience in the workplace. 

As a Business School we are always working to improve our programmes to make sure they fit with what both students want and business needs. Every five years we get the chance to make some major changes that really help us to keep our teaching and our modules up to date and relevant for business of the future. The modules listed online are part of this review and will give you a very good indication  of what you will be studying. Core modules

Year 0 - Foundation Year

Communication and Academic Skills for HE (SEMESTER ONE)

The aim of this module is to provide and support students with the necessary skills base for engaging with Foundation Year modules, and to help students identify and develop a range of transferable skills in preparation for studying at degree level. The module aims to develop a reflective approach by helping students identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and plan for their personal, educational and career development.

Personal and Career Development (SEMESTER TWO)

The aim of this module is to provide and support students with the necessary skills base for engaging with Foundation Year modules, and to help students identify and develop a range of transferable skills in preparation for studying at degree level. The module aims to develop a reflective approach by helping students identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and plan for their personal, educational and career development.

Contemporary Issues in Business, Management and Marketing (SEMESTER ONE)

To prepare students for the academic study of business, management and marketing by developing a knowledge of contemporary and emerging business issues to support students’ personal, academic and professional development to prepare for work in the modern business environment. This will be achieved through addressing key questions concerning current business issues. Students will begin to put into practice the study skills that are required at university level and begin to use tools of analysis to discuss important contemporary issues. The module further aims to help students to understand the importance of issues around work and people in organisations by looking at basic HRM functions, activities and issues.

Contemporary Issues in Law (SEMESTER ONE)

The aims of the module are to provide students with a basic understanding of contemporary issues in law. Students will be introduced to a number of contemporary issues through the perspective of different areas of legal study. Students will be able to look into a range of contemporary issues that require the application of legal rules and structures to develop their awareness of the implications and limitations of different areas of law in regards to specific issues.

Individual Project (SEMESTER TWO)

This module gives students the opportunity to investigate, under supervisory guidance, a particular topic or issue related to material covered in the subject-specific modules. A major aim of the project is to help students prepare for their chosen subject-specific study at Level 4.

Contemporary Issues in Accounting – Business Foundation Year Students (SEMESTER TWO)

The aims of the module are to introduce students to the basic mechanics and processes of financial accounting in both theory and practice and so prepare them for degree studies in Business Studies and Accounting and Finance. The module also aims to help students to understand the importance of financial and management accounting procedures in running a business effectively and the contemporary issues that are currently affecting these disciplines.

Introduction to Law – Law Foundation Year Students (SEMESTER TWO)

This module is designed to prepare students for degree studies in Law by introducing them to the study of Law and a theories and concepts in Law with an overview of legal practice and wider implications for society. This will enable students to understand Law both as a discipline and in its practical role within society. Practical examples are provided through case studies to support or illustrate the theory. Students will also be helped to develop their academic and communication skills by researching and delivering an individual presentation on a legal topic.

All Modules are 20 credit modules with the exception of the Dissertation Problem Orientated Project in Year 3 (Level 6) which is 40 credits (as indicated)

Year 1

Accounting and Finance for Business (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 1)

Accounting and Finance for Business introduces students to key accounting and finance topics. They are introduced to financial statements, and use a number of case studies to understand the role of finance in the business environment.

Business Analysis (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 2)

This module is designed to help students to develop a range of statistical and computing skills that will be valuable to them during the course of their academic programmes and in their future careers in business. Although there are not pre requisites for this module it is assumed that students have basic mathematical skills.

Contemporary Business Issues (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 1)

This module prepares students for the academic study of business by developing a knowledge of contemporary and emerging business issues to support students’ personal, academic and professional development to prepare for work in the modern business environment.

Economics (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 2)

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the fundamental economic issues stemming from the scarcity of resources. The relationship between business and the economic problem is analysed by means of micro and macro - economic models to equip students with an understanding of decision making at the levels of the market, the firm and the nation.

Marketing Principles and Practice (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 1)

The aim of the module is to provide students with an introduction to marketing, its fundamental concepts and an overview of marketing practice. Students will cover the development of the marketing concept and examine the ways in which it differs from the production, product, and sales approaches to business. This will develop into a wider understanding of the differences between the operational role of marketing and how it is applied as an organisational focus.

People Management in the 21st Century (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 2)

This module focuses on the behavioural aspects of people management in organisations. This is a vital area of study because the ability to understand behaviour in the workplace is a necessary prerequisite for making informed choices and for influencing organisational action such as decision making regarding organisational objectives, and leading and influencing the behaviour of others in order to see that the decisions are implemented. It is anticipated that by the end of the module students will be able to evaluate objectively and understand organisational behavioural situations and determine the best course of action from a range of perspectives.

Year 2

Management and Leadership (CMI) (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 2)

The module explores the context within which management and leadership takes place; the historical context within which the fundamental principles of management arise; the context of the external environment which impacts on organisational strategy and may cause ambiguity in relation to organisational objectives, policies, working practices, ethical considerations and management approaches. It explores a range of different perspectives on management and leadership and focuses in on particular managerial/leadership issues that lead to ambiguities and problems.

Project Management (apm, CMI) (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 1)

This module aims to examine critically the role of project management within a contemporary business context. It also explains how specific project management applications play an important role in producing successful business outcomes and examines the philosophies, principles, structures and methodologies of project management.

Work Based Learning (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 2)

The aim of the module is develop students’ skills in seeking and obtaining a work placement or internship of a minimum of three weeks’ duration. It will also develop in students their skills in learning from work experience and applying academic learning to the work place.

Year 3

Strategic Management (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 1)

The aim of the module is to provide students with an understanding of the impact of the business environment and the resources of the organisation, both human and material, on strategic planning and choice. This will enable students to consider strategic alternatives, evaluate their suitability and make them aware of the complex issues involved in implementing strategy and managing strategic change.

Financial Management (20 credits)

(SEMESTER 2)

The module will consist of a review of financial techniques which will need to be employed in assessing corporate performance, and introduce new methods of assessing corporate success. The consideration of financial risk management and the various instruments and techniques that are available to business executives will be covered in some depth. Another key area of study will be the workings and implications of the stock exchange, both in relation to the shareholders and to the business organisations and financial markets. Sources of appropriate funds will be identified and evaluated. The cost of equity capital will be calculated using the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) and the capital asset pricing model (CAPM).

Business in Society

This module provides you with an introduction to issues pertaining to the changing role of businesses in society. It aims to encourage you to consider how companies can manage their business processes to produce an overall positive impact on society at the local, national and global level while at the same time achieving their organisational goals.

Consumer Behaviour

This module develops your critical awareness and understanding of consumer and organisational buyer behaviour and how they can be influenced by marketing activity.

Corporate Financial Accounting

This module provides you with a thorough understanding of financial accounting techniques and accounting statements suitable for analysis and publication appreciating the regulatory framework.

e-Marketing

This module explores the nature of the challenges facing e-Marketing, the impact of more sophisticated and demanding consumers, the globalisation of markets and the advent of virtual distribution and payment systems.

Entrepreneurship

This module provides you with an understanding of the main concepts and theories of entrepreneurship, its role in the modern economy, and hence aims to develop a practical perspective on the processes involved in new venture creation.

Management Accounting

This module develops your knowledge and skills in the application of management accounting techniques to quantitative and qualitative information for planning, decision-making, performance evaluation, and control.

Management of Operations

This module evaluates the role of operations management within a business context. There will be particular emphasis placed on the role and function of the operations manager in an organisation, encompassing quality management and the role of project management.

Project Management

This module examines the role of project management within a contemporary business context and the underpinning philosophies, principles, structures and methodologies.

Retail Management

This module provides you with a comprehensive understanding of developments within the retail sector, consumer behaviour and store design.

Work Based Learning

Year 3

Entrepreneurship in the Global Marketplace

This module explores the notion of international entrepreneurship as a contributory factor impacting on economic development, allowing evaluation of the issues influencing entrepreneurs and business ventures in emerging, developing, established and declining global markets.

Financial Strategy

This module develops your understanding of advanced financial accounting issues and of the treasury function, auditing, taxation and corporate financial strategy.

International Business

This module evaluates and contrasts the opportunities and constraints facing businesses in different areas of the world. You will also gain an awareness of cross-cultural differences, sustainability and ethical considerations for entrepreneurial and other ventures around the world.

International Marketing

This module provides you with an understanding of the different cultural, economic and political environments that are necessary for success for international markets.

Problem-Orientated Project

This module provides you with an opportunity to study the practical application of theoretical underpinning to a business-oriented problem and the development of students’ research skills.

Public Relations

This module develops a critical understanding of the strategic, international and specialist roles of PR, whilst building your written PR skills ready for the work environment.

Service Management

This module builds on concepts developed in ‘Management of Operations.’ It will acquaint you with the complex demands made upon service management organisations and the challenges that their staff face.

Strategic issues in HRM

This module develops your understanding of the strategic nature of human resource management within the changing context of work and evaluates effective people management strategies.

Our students find their degree a significant advantage when selecting a career, because of the combination of academic study and practical assessments; this is often appreciated by potential employers. Among the occupations our recent graduates are now following are air traffic control, airline pilot, armed forces, banking, project management, retail management and teaching. Some of our recent overseas graduates have moved directly into management positions in their home countries. This degree also provides an ideal basis for continued study at Masters level in a range of business-related disciplines.

Teaching

You will be taught over two Semesters, taking three modules in each. Teaching is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops.

You will typically have around 12 contact hours per week. Seminars and workshops are organised in smaller groups to enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet with your academic personal tutor. Where necessary, you will use industry-standard software such as Sage in Accounting. Between year 2 and year 3 students can opt to undertake a 12 month placement with an external organisation. Your actual contact hours depend on the option modules you select.

Independent learning

When not attending lectures, seminars, workshops or other timetabled sessions you will continue learning through self-study. Typically, this involves reading journal articles and books, undertaking research in the library, working on projects, and preparing for coursework assignments/examinations, workshops and seminars. Your module tutor will direct you towards specific readings and/or activities to complete before class.

Students taking the 40 credit Dissertation module in year three, will undertake independent research and work under the supervision of a member of the course team with whom they will meet with regularly.

Overall workload

Your overall workload typically consists of 12 contact hours but you will undertake independent learning and assessment activity.

Academic input

The team consists of highly qualified academics. They have a range of expertise and experience. All our team members have industry experience and many are research-active and all deliver research-informed teaching.

You should note members of the teaching team might change.

Postgraduate students sometimes assist in teaching and assessing some modules. However, experienced academics teach the vast majority of lectures and seminars.

Academic Support

You will have full access of the University’s Academic Development department who provide help and advice on ways to improve you learning and your own work.

You will be assessed by a number of methods including essays, reports, business simulations, presentations, reflective logs, computer based assessments, examinations, and case studies. Some modules include group assessments to help students become familiar with working as a team; often a key aspect of professional and graduate level work.

The nature of the assessment depends on the modules you take. This mixture is intended to build individual knowledge and skills in the application of theory and best practice to realistic business scenarios. It also provides valuable experience in the importance of effective teamwork and leadership in achieving goals.

Feedback

You will receive feedback on your work which is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor.

You will receive online feedback on all formal assessments undertaken by coursework and submitted online. In many cases you will receive feedback online, by e-mail or in person. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. We aim to provide you with feedback within 15 working days of submission

Pass Marks

Normally you must achieve a pass mark of at least 40% all modules to proceed to the next year. Certain modules, for example a 40 credit Dissertation, require you to pass a pre requisite module before being allowed to undertake the module.

Christ Church Business School recognises the importance of professional body accreditation, to ensure that not only do we deliver well researched courses, but also that our students meet the professional expectations of prospective employers and have the opportunity to gain professional body qualifications. This includes modules accredited by the Association of Project Management (APM). Our Project Management module was the first from a university to gain accreditation and exemption for its teaching and assessment. The Business School has accreditation with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). The year two modules of Management and Leadership, Project Management and Human Resource Management are accredited by the CMI and on successful completion you will be eligible for CMI Level 5 qualifications in Leadership and Management.

You will have access to our Christ Church Trading Floor. This offers you the chance to gain practical experience of trade floor activities and financial market analysis. We are one of the few universities in the UK offering direct use of Bloomberg data, information and analytics in a dedicated trading room which provides a simulation of what it is like to work on a real trading floor in the financial district.

We work with industry stakeholders to further advance our teaching programme, research and knowledge exchange. Some stakeholders come in as guest lecturers and we also have masterclasses by visiting professors who are chosen for their expertise in business and management. These established links have helped some of our students to secure placements.

A Business School Advisory Board has been established, which includes representatives from across the private and public sector. This encourages employer engagement as the Board engages in discussion about technical content of the curriculum and the development of wider employability skills, the provision of work placement opportunities, guest speakers, live case studies, and workplace visits.
