Profile summary
Julie is an anthropologist specialising in tourism, cultural heritage and sustainability. She has worked in the UK university sector for 20 years, teaching anthropology and tourism, postgraduate research methods, and field-based courses on tourism and development.
Julie has worked around the world carrying out consultancy, capacity building and training for UNESCO, the European Union and the British Government, as well as local authorities, social enterprises, NGOs and the private sector. For the past two years she has been working with UNDP Turkey on a programme building institutional and local capacity for sustainable community tourism, and is currently engaged in implementing projects in pilot destinations in Turkey. Julie has directed and collaborated on numerous European projects, and was one of the team responsible for developing training and support for projects funded by the Euromed Heritage 4 programme. She is experienced in the design and delivery of innovative, culturally sensitive curricula and training/capacity building workshops for professionals and communities in the field of tourism and cultural heritage.
Julie is a member of ICOMOS, a global network of interdisciplinary experts working for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places and practices, and sits on ICOMOS’ International Scientific Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage. She is experienced in intangible cultural heritage recording and safeguarding practices in a UK and international context, and in designing and delivering ICH training for heritage professionals.
Julie is experienced in all aspects of the project cycle, from design and implementation to reporting and evaluation. She holds the practitioners' certificate in PM4SD, a project management methodology specifically adapted for achieving sustainable outcomes in tourism development projects.
