Information for External Examiners

The External Examiner system allows the University to ensure its qualifications are of a suitable standard, and that student academic performance is judged appropriately and fairly.

The Quality and Standards Office sends out a letter of appointment to all external examiners for taught courses, which includes a list of the modules, the terms and conditions of the appointment as well as the anticipated fee.

The University holds an online induction session for External Examiners who are new to Canterbury Christ Church University. This session is designed to cover the essential information that External Examiners need to know to fulfil their role.

External Examiners – Accessing Blackboard

External Examiners will be provided with their annual report template by the Faculty Quality Administration team in which the course and modules being examined resides.

External Examiners should complete and return their completed report to the relevant Faculty Quality Administration team from which they received the template annual report.

Faculty Quality Administration Teams:

The relevant Faculty Quality Administration team will then ensure the completed report is forwarded to the Course Director and Quality and Standards Office, the latter of which will authorise payment.

Failure to return your annual report to the relevant Faculty Quality Administration team will result in delayed payment.

Once you have reviewed the student work, please complete your final annual report on the MS Word template and send back to the relevant Faculty Quality team. They will then notify the Quality and Standards Office who will authorise payment to be made.

The dates below are absolute deadlines by which the University requires your annual report(s).

  • For Boards held in the summer of 2022Wednesday 31 August 2022
  • For Boards held in the autumn of 2022: Monday 14 November 2022

In cases where student work has been reviewed after these deadlines, please provide your annual report as soon as possible thereafter.

You will receive payment once you have submitted your completed annual report to your Faculty Quality Administration team who sent you the original template (see above ‘How to submit your annual report’ for Faculty details).

They will then notify the Quality and Standards Office who will authorise payment.

Once submitted, your report will be submitted to your Primary Contact, the Course Director, Head of School, Faculty Director of Quality and the Faculty Director of Learning and Teaching.

At School level, your report will be received, read and responded to, as appropriate.

At an institutional level, the external examiner reports play a key role in the University's quality assurance and enhancement procedures. The outcomes of the annual external examiner reports are reported to the Faculty Quality Committee and the Education and Student Experience Committee periodically throughout the year.

For more information on how the University uses your report, please see the Annual Reports section of the External Examiner Handbook.
