Information for External Examiners

The External Examiner system allows the University to ensure its qualifications are of a suitable standard, and that student academic performance is judged appropriately and fairly.

The Quality and Standards Office sends out a letter of appointment to all external examiners for taught courses, which includes a list of the modules, the terms and conditions of the appointment as well as the anticipated fee.

The University held its online briefing session for External Examiners beginning their appointment in academic year 2022-23. The session took place in November 2022 and covers the essential information that External Examiners need to know to fulfil their role. Click on the below link to access the event recording.

From academic year 2022-23, the University will be introducing a new automated submission portal for receiving External Examiner annual reports.

The Quality and Standards Office will send you an annual report form to complete. Instructions on how to submit your report are avaialble at the bottom of the annual report form. These forms are also available to download in the 'Downloads' section on the right hand side of this page.

Once you have reviewed the student work, please complete your final annual report on the MS Word template and submit to the submission portal by following the instructions at the bottom of the report form.

The dates below are absolute deadlines by which the University requires your annual report(s).

  • For Boards held in the summer of 2023: Thursday 31st August 2023
  • For Boards held in the autumn of 2023: Thursday 30th November 2023

In cases where student work has been reviewed after these deadlines, please provide your annual report as soon as possible thereafter.

You will receive payment once you have submitted your completed annual report. If you submit your report after the 7th of each month then you will receive payment at the end of the following month.

Once submitted to the portal, your report will be sent to your Primary Contact, the Course Director, Head of School, Faculty Director of Quality and the Faculty Director of Learning and Teaching.

At School level, your report will be received, read and responded to, as appropriate.

At an Institutional level, the external examiner reports play a key role in the University's quality assurance and enhancement procedures. The outcomes of the annual external examiner reports are reported to the Faculty Quality Committee and the Education and Student Experience Committee periodically throughout the year.

For more information on how the University uses your report, please see the Annual Reports section of the External Examiner Handbook.
