Our current students find these trips really beneficial as they provide the chance to see how the topics they are learning about are applied in the real world and are a fantastic opportunity to get to know others on the course.

“The fact that within my course we had a residential field trip, which gave us the opportunity to have first-hand experiences of what, we learned throughout the course”. Student quote from NSS 2021.

“There have been great opportunities to interact and connect with fellow students! This was due to the free trip to Tenerife in our first year”. Student quote from NSS 2021.

Pre-course reading

To prepare for seminars, it is important that you are aware of current issues within the tourism industry. The global tourism industry has been in a crisis in the last couple of years due to the pandemic, but the world is beginning to adapt and learn to live with coronavirus. To bring yourself up to date and able to contribute to the discussions we will have, please familiarise yourself with the following:

All of the above have detailed reports about what is happening in the tourism industry and how it is quickly recovering. What is going to be very interesting is that we will be able to discuss and monitor this in real time. The above sites also have reports on many other aspects of tourism such as sustainability, heritage, poverty alleviation, climate change and current trends. Please do look at them too.

If you really want to get a head start, get a copy of the core text for the Introduction to Tourism module, as it will give you a good overview to the subject: Fletcher, J. et al (2013) Tourism: Principles and Practice. 5th edition. Harlow: Pearson
