Establishing a Service User Consultant Group

There is now powerful evidence of the discrimination, apathy, ignorance and prejudice that people with learning disabilities face in generic healthcare, and of their widespread social exclusion, exemplified by their frequent victimisation in hate crime.

It seems imperative, therefore, to ensure that the views and experiences of people with learning disabilities are represented in health and social care education if their health and wellbeing are to be positively influenced by the students and graduates of the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing.

There is evidence from other universities that the creation and maintenance of a reference group comprising adults with learning disabilities has potential to enhance research and education designed to address these issues. As a result, Cathy Bernal and Andy Nazarjuk, Senior Lecturers in Learning Disability, have planned the launch of a service user consultant group to review the quality of education related to this topic within the university. Funding has been utilised to purchase licences for “easy read” materials, which will facilitate communication with the group.

It is anticipated that this group will meet at least quarterly, and that its deliberations and suggested innovations will enhance the impact of education in learning disability within the Faculty.
