Project title

‘GPs' perceptions of their role in supporting people with chronic pain.'

Profile summary

I joined Canterbury Christ Church University as a PhD student in 2016, after undertaking an MSc in healthcare management with the NHS Leadership Academy and Birmingham University. I originally trained as a learning disability nurse, and was a Charge Nurse in a long-stay hospital and an Assessment and Treatment service in Essex, before moving to Kent and working for health and social care charities, social services and most recently as a Project Manager in a NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, developing community services for people with long-term-conditions. I developed a local NHS Personal Health Budgets programme for homeless people, people with long-term-conditions, mental health needs and/or Medically Unexplained Symptoms.

I have an interest in Medically Unexplained Symptoms, chronic pain, innovative services, patient empowerment and supported self-management.

For my PhD I am researching how GPs perceive their role and their relationship, in supporting people with chronic pain, and factors which affect GPs’ perceptions; strategies and barriers for support, training needs, supporting self-management and patient activation.
