During the shortlisting process and the interview you will need to be able to demonstrate that you have these personal skills in order to be considered suitable for the course and the midwifery profession.
When selecting applicants, several factors are taken into account. *Modules subject to approval
BSc Midwifery is a full-time course. Your learning will be delivered in a modular format. Each module contributes to the attainment of a BSc (Hons) in Midwifery and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (as a midwife). Studying at CCCU will be a collaborative journey, where you will learn from experienced midwives, other health care professionals and your peers.
You will explore all aspects of the role of the midwife and how they support women, birthing people and their families. You will emerge a skilled, creative, critical thinker who can provide the highest standard of safe and compassionate care.
You will participate in seminars, workshops and group work. You will also spend time in our state-of-the-art simulation suite and have access to our anatomy lab. Peer to peer teaching and learning will be a central part of your course both in the University and the practice environment. Your learning time will be equally divided between university and practice areas, developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to practice as a midwife.
There will be guided study content held within the virtual learning environment (VLE) as well as access to the extensive library at Augustine House supported by expert librarians and the learning development team.
Midwifery knowledge is perpetually advancing and evolving. You will be expected to undertake independent learning to support your academic modules and practice experience. This may be undertaken individually or within small groups and will include problem solving activities. Each 30-credit module will include 66 hours taught content plus 84 hours directed study and 150 hours independent learning.
This will equip you with the skills to become a lifelong learner, including the ability to plan and organise your time effectively, a crucial skill for all those in health care. You will be expected to take accountability for setting and achieving your individual learning goals both in your academic work and your practice experience. Academic staff will provide guidance for your independent learning through the virtual learning environment.
As a midwife you will require a wide range of theoretical and clinical knowledge to practice safely and effectively. There is an equal division between theory focused learning (min 2,300 hours) and practice learning (min 2,300 hours).
Your theoretical learning will include:
We use problem and enquiry-based learning. This method helps you understand topics more deeply and enables you to use theory to support person-centred care delivery and decision-making. You will also learn with and from other health and social care students and apprentices through interprofessional education opportunities. Simulated practice sessions will support you to make the important links between theory and practice. Where appropriate, sessions may be delivered by practitioners from clinical practice or delivered in partnership with service user co-teachers.
Throughout your three years of study, you will undertake regular clinical placements within both the hospital and community settings. These will enable you to experience the full scope of midwifery practice, always supported in your learning by experienced registered midwives and other healthcare professionals.
The teaching team consists of highly qualified midwifery academics who have a range of expertise and experience. All our team members hold or are working towards teaching qualifications and are research-active across a wide variety of midwifery and women’s health-related topics.
You will have an allocated personal academic tutor (PAT) to provide support for the three years of your course and will also be supported by experienced midwives and other professionals in clinical practice.
This course has been developed with service providers, service users, and midwifery students to deliver contemporary, evidence-based midwifery education. We ensure that our graduates are fit for practice in evolving and dynamic midwifery care service.Caroline GibbsLead Midwife for Education
