About British Studies

The British Studies Semester Programme is a programme we have designed especially for study abroad and exchange students. If you are a student at one of our partner institutions, you can live and study in Canterbury for up to two semesters.

As part of our programme you will be able to take courses from across the university’s catalogue, as well as a series of 3 credit-hour courses in British history, literature, and culture, which are designed specifically for our study abroad or exchange students.

We will provide you with a stimulating and rewarding learning experience that is both diverse and flexible, so that it suits your interests as well as the requirements of your major. As well as introducing you to the rigour and depth of the British university system, our programme meets the education requirements of our partner universities, so you will be able to earn credit towards your degree at your home institution based on the grades you achieve with us at Canterbury Christ Church.

Integrated with the academic programme are cultural field trips around the United Kingdom, particularly to London and the South East, and sometimes even to Europe, and you are also given plenty of opportunities to travel on your own time. One of the main aims of our programme is for you to develop your independence and your cultural awareness and competence, so that you return home having had an experience that has changed your life for the better.

You can choose to study with in either:

  • the Fall semester/semester 1 (September-December)
  • the Spring semester (January-May)
  • the Fall and Spring semesters, semesters 1 and 2 (September-May)

Exchange Students from the US and Canada

If you attend one of our partner institutions that has an exchange agreement with Canterbury Christ Church, you can choose to study abroad in Canterbury as a bilateral exchange student for either a semester or a full academic year. You will be automatically enrolled on the British Studies programme, and fully integrated with both students from Canterbury and other inbound study abroad and exchange students.

However, the way you pay your tuition will differ, so check with your Study Abroad Advisor at your home institution for details.
