I commenced my current post as a Senior Lecturer in Psychology in 2016. I have a particular interest in research and teaching in the area of mental health, including body image concerns and anxiety disorders. Prior to my present post, I worked as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS between 1994 and 2016. I also worked as a Clinical & Academic tutor on the Doctoral Training Programme in Clinical Psychology, run by the Salomons Centre for Applied Psychology, between 2014 and 2016.
In terms of my academic background, I graduated from the University of Sussex in 1985 with a degree in developmental psychology, and completed my clinical psychology training in 1994 at the Institute of Psychiatry (IOP; now the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London). I subsequently completed a PhD at the IOP in 2008 under the supervision of David Veale and Padmal de Silva. This research investigated cognitive and social processes in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
In terms of previous employment, between 2009 and 2016 I worked as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) Specialist at the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma, South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. This included the provision of CBT for a randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of CBT for BDD. My post prior to this involved the provision of CBT for individuals with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and associated psychological problems. My role also involved extensive clinical supervision of trainees and qualified clinical psychologists, and supervision of major research projects for the IOP doctorate in clinical psychology.
Research and knowledge exchange
I have a strong interest in research, particularly in the areas of body image, social anxiety, social interaction difficulties, and low social self-esteem. One of my current projects is investigating the effect of body image concerns on satisfaction in couple relationships. This research will include the development of a new questionnaire. I am also involved in the supervision of undergraduate research dissertations, Phd Theses, and Clinical Psychology Trainees' Major Research Projects (MRPs).
