Dr Ian Durrant

I am a senior lecturer and researcher, teaching predominately in the education suite.

I teach on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. These include BA Early Childhood Studies, Special Educational Needs & Inclusion, and Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring. I also deliver several modules on the MA Education. I lead modules in child development, therapeutic work with children, mentoring, coaching and critical friendship, organisational development and leadership as well as research. I am a personal and academic tutor and dissertation supervisor for undergraduates, MA, EdD and PHD students. I sit on the faculty’s ethics committee and am an HEA mentor and assessor.

I began my teaching career in further education where I lead the GCSE and A Level psychology programmes, as well as Access to Humanities and Social Sciences and BTEC. During this time, I delivered the Certificate in Education programme as an associate of Canterbury Christ Church University and worked with Kent Police as trainer on their National Firearms Instructors Course. After this I worked the National Policing Improvement Agency as an occupational psychologist. Part of this role involved delivering training to police officers and staff, including competency-based interviewing and delivering assessment centres. I also spent several years as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University delivering their MA research modules to students at home and around the world.  Whilst at Canterbury Christ Church University, I have delivered critical friend and impact assessor courses to local authority staff, The National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordinators and guest lectures for BSc Psychology, BSc and MSc in Policing courses and foundation degrees in education.

My doctorial research was about workplace bullying in the public sector and my current research interest is in work place relations and occupational culture. I have also been involved in a diverse range of research projects. These have included provision for children with life limiting illnesses, evaluation of Mencap inspired educators programme and teachers and school leaders’ perceptions of community action and extended services. I have been involved in projects evaluating provision for unaccompanied migrant children, audits of outdoor areas in Kent nurseries and exploring staff and student perceptions of distance and online learning. I am currently part of a team who designed and administered a staff survey for a British Police force.
