The School of Humanities and Educational Studies is internationally recognised for its research and expertise in Archaeology, Education, English Literature and Creative Writing, History, and Theology. These diverse disciplinary areas are connected by their shared interest in investigating and articulating the human experience and the complex interrelationship between past, present, and future.

We are an inclusive academic community of intellectually curious and empathetic individuals, respectful of diverse viewpoints and alert to alternative perspectives. The inquisitive attitude at the heart of our disciplines supports life-long learning, creativity, and innovation. We have a particular commitment to exploring what it means to live well and with purpose, and how we can collectively contribute to a more just and sustainable future.

Our location in a World Heritage Site, and more widely in the socially and environmentally diverse county of Kent, offers rich scope for interdisciplinary research and applied teaching.

Our courses increasingly provide our students with opportunities to enhance their digital literacy and to engage with real-life briefs developed in collaboration with external partners in a variety of professional settings, including educational and environmental projects, publishing and media, event management, archival work, campaign coordination, and legal and administrative roles.
