Sunday 29 April 2018 | 10.30am-4.30pm Tutor: Gillian Draper | Canterbury campus | £39 The historic farmsteads, hamlets and villages spread across the varying landscapes of the South-East, linked by a network of ancient paths and roads, have an enduring fascination. How do we understand the development of these routes and settlements and the lives of those who dwelt there? On special occasions not only peasants but also the rich and townsfolk made pilgrimages to major cities and cathedrals. Drawing on old maps, place-names, charters and landscape evidence, we will review southern pilgrim routes and also recreate the experience of a medieval pilgrim journey from Sussex to Winchester.
