This course is ideal if you are working or volunteering in an educational setting, especially if you already have higher education credits and wish to gain a full honours degree.

You’ll be taught by experienced staff and gain insight from expert guest lecturers, enabling you to build a deep understanding of how children learn.

You will explore areas including:

  • planning and assessment
  • teaching and learning across the curriculum
  • child development and behaviour
  • inclusion, safeguarding and special needs
  • philosophy and sociology of education.

The Primary Education Progression Route (PEPR) offers the opportunity to develop the key skills, knowledge and understanding required to meet the relevant professional standards required to enter into a career in teaching.

During the course, a particular emphasis is placed on critical reflection, to help you to combine your understanding of theory and research in education with your professional practice.

We provide a significant proportion of the teachers in the South East of England, with a particular emphasis on Kent and Medway. Teachers from Canterbury Christ Church University work in a wide range of education settings and schools across the country and the wider world. The University is committed to training the next generation of outstanding teachers.

This Primary Education Progression Route (PEPR) route will enable you to become a generalist primary classroom teacher, by supporting you in reaching Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will also gain a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree. During the course you will gain a strong understanding of children’s learning and development, alongside experience of teaching the curriculum.

The University will recommend to the Department for Education and the National College for Teaching and Leadership that successful students be awarded Qualified Teacher Status.

Following the award of QTS, and the successful completion of the Newly Qualified Teacher year, you will be qualified to teach the whole of the primary phase.

The ability to remain in your current role within your educational setting whilst studying for a degree and professional qualification. This part-time course provides a means of study that provides those who are unable to study full-time the opportunity to gain both a degree and qualified teacher status.

The advantages of part-time study on this course include flexibility around family commitments, the ability to earn whilst studying, and the integration of study and work-based learning.

This course is aimed at those who work, on a paid or voluntary basis, with children in an educational setting and wish to gain Qualified Teacher Status. It is intended for students who have already gained some Higher Education credits in a relevant area through previous study. Youcan top-up your Foundation degree or other equivalent qualification in a relevant area to an honours degree whilst working towards QTS.

Through an integrated course of academic and professional partnership practice learning, you will be provided with access to the relevant knowledge, skills and understanding that should enable you to demonstrate a deep understanding of children’s development and the potential to apply this in your own classroom teaching. In addition to this you will be encouraged to develop a strong knowledge of the primary curriculum and will be inspired to teach in innovative ways that have the prospect of exciting and motivating children.

The course provides you with the opportunity to be actively involved in your own learning and development. You will study academic disciplines specific to teaching and learning and have the opportunity to link theory and practice during your employment experience and professional partnership school placements. This combination will support you in support you in becoming a creative and flexible teacher practitioner. You will be supported in your transition into Initial Teacher Education alongside the transition into studying at Higher Education level.

The principles underpinning primary education are introduced and you will be encouraged to develop a personal philosophy and understanding of how a child learns and develops. There is also an area of study dedicated to developing your knowledge, understanding and practical skills that are required to support the teaching and learning of pupils as they develop through the primary age range, recognising the holistic needs of children and how to support these in teaching and learning.

The professional placement is a developmental and progressive experience that evolves over the two years of the course; you will undertake observation and collaborative teaching before progressing to solo class teaching. This allows scope for reflection and time to develop a range of appropriate teaching styles and strategies.

Work experience

Professional placements are built into the course and there are also opportunities to engage in school based tasks and projects beyond the professional placements. The focus of the course is that you are in school for two to four days a week alongside your studies.

You will be expected at all times to demonstrate that you understand and uphold the Teaching Standards , as published by the Department for Education.

The current modules are being reviewed. There may be some changes, but the course will include all the content described below:

  • You will be introduced to the principles underpinning planning, progression and assessment for different children's learning and development needs.
  • You will be introduced to and build upon your understanding of the ways in which a child develops, exploring how different contexts and approaches might affect children’s learning and development. This will include, for example, physical, cognitive and language development that are informed by local and international perspectives.
  • Through university sessions and professional placements within our partnership, you will also be introduced to what it means to be a professional, including, for example, the roles and responsibilities of a teacher and statutory and non-statutory guidance underpinning these.
  • Through university sessions and professional placement, you will explore specific subject areas of the early years and primary curriculum, including English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Computing, alongside the subjects that underpin the wider primary curriculum.
  • Through your engagement with professional placements within our partnership schools, you will be provided with opportunities to make progress towards meeting the current professional standards through the structured provision of opportunities to observe experienced teachers in a range of classroom settings, in order to identify key features of effective classroom practice.

We continually review and where appropriate, revise the range of modules on offer to reflect changes in the subject and ensure the best student experience. We will inform applicants of any changes to the course structure before enrolment.

The vast majority of our students go into employment as qualified teachers following the course. There are a number of study options available to graduates of this course at Canterbury Christ Church University during the Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year and beyond, leading to Masters in Education degrees.

Travel and food/drink.

Text books Most core texts are available in the library as a physical copy or available through the e-library. However, there may be some core texts that students wish to purchase or that are recommended for purchase by the programme.
DBS Checks There is a charge made for this process of £52
Occupational Health Checks Students may need to pay their GP to complete the appropriate section of the Occupational Health Questionnaire.
Professional Skills Tests All students on Initial Teacher Training courses are required to pass Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to commencing the course. They will need to pay to get to a registered test centre to undertake the tests. They will also need to pay for any re-sits they need to sit with the maximum number of opportunities to take each test being set at 3.
Travel to campuses and other teaching locations (particularly for use of specialist facilities)

The student will need to travel to University facilities, as well as any taught sessions in schools, swimming pools and other locations as timetabled.

Clothing / Kit Students would need to purchase their own clothes for PE sessions including trainers and comfortable clothing.
Learning Materials

Students may wish to purchase their own materials, such as teaching resources.

There are materials available in sessions and for students to borrow from the University Library. However, if should wish to buy their own, they will need to cover the cost of this.

The course is delivered one day a week over two years.  You will complete 120 Level 6 credits during the course. Normally a 20 credit module carries a study time of 200 hours. 60 hours of this is completed via university contact days or directed tasks. The remaining 140-160 hours per 20 credit module consists of self-directed self-study that is completed in your own time.

Academic input

All of the tutors teaching on this course are senior lecturers who have studied at Masters and Doctoral level and all of whom have extensive experience in the classroom.

Surprising terms

You will need to pass all school-based placement modules in order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status. Should you not pass a school-based placement module, this may potentially delay completion of the course. It is important to be aware that this might have an impact on how long it would then take you to complete the course.

As part of the Undergraduate Initial Teacher Education Scheme, this course has special regulations.

Modules will be assessed through a variety of approaches, such as essays, learning log, oral presentations and placements.

Your professional learning in school or other education settings will be underpinned and informed by an assessed record of development which will demonstrate your ability to evaluate and analyse your own practice in the contexts of both the schools and other settings in which you are working, and of national policies and curricular requirements.

Assessments will all be designed to help you investigate in detail particular aspects of teaching strategies, educational theory or research which will have relevance to your teaching, and to reflect on how theory has informed or can inform your practice.

The University will recommend to the Department for Education and the National College for Teaching and Leadership that successful students be awarded Qualified Teacher Status.

All teaching sessions linked to practical curriculum subjects, such as Science, Music, PE, Art and Design Technology, take place wherever possible in contexts which replicate the kind of environment and equipment you would expect to see in a primary school.

Placements are provided by partnership schools in and around Kent and Medway, and further afield in East Sussex, Essex and South East London.

A number of our tutors are key members of professional subject associations and professional subject bodies, such as the Association of Science Educators, United Kingdom Literacy Association and National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.

Entry requirements

  • A foundation degree or equivalent in a relevant area with at least 240 higher education credits, plus Mathematics, English Language and Science GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent), is required. If you do not have English at GCSE grade C or above you will be required to take and pass the University Equivalency tests for entry onto this course. There is a charge for this test.You will also need at least one year's experience working with children in an educational setting.

    Additionally, you will need at least two days a week paid or voluntary employment working with children in an educational setting for the duration of the course, with the full support of the Head Teacher or other Senior Leader in the employment setting.

    You will need to be assessed as fit to teach, including an occupational health and Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS), according to the current government requirements. You will need to provide two supportive references from relevant referees and meet any additional national requirements for training to teach as set out in the current legislation and guidance. Currently there is a governmental requirement for you to have passed the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy. Canterbury Christ Church offer free skills test preparation sessions to support you in taking these tests.
