Foundation Degree at London South East Colleges Events & Venues Management  2018/19

The Foundation degree in Events and Venues programme is a full-time programme which will allow you to gain the full range of skills necessary for managing events in leading entertainment venues within the UK and Europe as well as further afield.  The programme is offered in two flexible delivery modes i.e. College based and work based learning delivery.

During the programme you will gain knowledge of the Events Environment, Personal Professional Development, considerations with Health & Safety and Risk Management within venues; project management (during which students often lead or are involved with a particular event) Leadership Skills, Business Development and finance operations as well new areas in International Events and Entrepreneurship.

The curriculum offer is designed and developed in consultation with leading employers in events and venues industry. Also, work based learning is underpinned within all the modules and work based learning/placements will be a mandatory part of the foundation degree. You will follow these modules to gain knowledge and skills in your two years.

Year 1

In Year 1 you will be taking on courses which will provide you with awareness and introduction to the events and venues industry and also, work on skills of professional development, project management and finance. You will also, undertake 50 hours of mandatory work placement in the Year 1 for your work based learning.

Personal and Professional Development

The course aims to increase students' employability in the events and venues sector, by developing personal and professional skills. Students will be provided with the skills to help them critically reflect on their personal and professional development and will produce an Event Professional Portfolio.

Events Environment

To gain awareness of the different cultural backgrounds within which events and venues management can be located. Learners will be introduced to important tools for cultural analysis. By using PESTEL, the Cultural Web and Hofstede’s framework for cultural analysis, learners will increase their understanding of local and international cultural contexts for business. This will increase student employability within the global and international events environment.

Occupational Safety Management

The Occupational Safety Management course allow students to explore the relationship between the management of Occupational Health & Safety, Event & Venue Security, Risk Assessment and Emergency Planning, as well as developing the abilities required to enable students to demonstrate practical application of these skills

Events Project Management

The aim of this Event Project Management course is to introduce students to the important roles and responsibilities of Event Project Managers in a rapidly growing hospitality and entertainment industry.  They will have opportunities to explore and appreciate the complex relationships involved in event management. This will enhance their understanding of events and hospitality sector in Greenwich, London and other parts of the world.

Finance and Funding

The aim of this Finance and funding in the Event and Venue course is to introduce students to the important aspects of financial planning and management. This will require students to be able to produce basic accounts associated with an event and to learn how to interpret business accounts and budgets and analysing profit/loss and cost concepts. This will allow them to understand some of the expectations of business owners and stakeholders, and enable them to source appropriate funding to achieve short and long-term goals of Events and venues business operations

Work Based Learning Project 1

Students will be required to carry out research and activities within their work setting to demonstrate a full understanding of the links between theory and practice.  Student are expected to undertake and evidence 50 hours of work placement in Year 1 to support the development of their worked-based learning project.

Year 2

The Year 2 will focus on further developing your knowledge and skills on local, national and international events and venues industry and also, equip with skills of leadership and management and entrepreneurship. You will undertake 100 hours of mandatory work placement in this year for your work based learning. You will undertake the following modules in Year 2:

Entrepreneurship and Business Strategy

The aims of Entrepreneurship and Business Strategy are to provide learners with opportunities to research their business idea within the framework of a Business Plan. Learners will investigate their own start up using ideas from finance and marketing. The local Greenwich SME business environment will be investigated as a context for the start up.

International Events

The aim of this module is to explore and understand the types and nature of international events and their impact on local, host and global communities. It also examines the political, social and economic impact of these mega-events. The involvement of stakeholders and various marketing strategies used to achieve maximum leverage for the events. Also, the module analysis the environmental and financial challenges encountered by organisers.

Leadership and Management

The aim of this Introduction to Leadership and Management in Events Industry course is to introduce students to the principles and practical implication of Leadership and Management.  Students will be able to explore the impacts of Motivation, Teamwork, Leadership styles and conflict management on Leadership and Management in the Events and Venues context. They will also achieve a working knowledge of the legal framework that affects the employer relationship particularly as it relates to Events and Venues Industry. 

Marketing Concepts and Events

Effective marketing is a critical factor in today’s market place. This module provides an insight into the principles and practices of marketing as it pertains to events and venues management.  Learners will cover the concepts and principles of marketing, the marketing mix, promotional mix, marketing planning and consumer behaviour.

Work Based Learning Project 2

The aims and objectives of this course are devised by the students in a project outline. Each student will identify a project related to a particular issue or practice in the workplace, relating to their Venues, Events and Hospitality Management studies. The project outline will briefly set out the focus of the portfolio, including: methodology, scope, timescale, activities and method. Participants will be required to show that the project has utility in the workplace.  Student are expected to undertake and evidence 100 hours of work placement in Year 1 to support the development of their worked-based learning project.

Successful completion of this course allows you to continue your studies towards a Bachelor’s degree in events or tourism management at Canterbury Christ Church University. Employment in the events, venues and hospitality industry

Our teaching supports students in reaching their potential in the course. We recognise the diversity of learning styles and techniques they will use and offer a variety of means through which they can engage with the subject: lectures, seminars, discussions, presentations, visiting speakers, digital materials, coursework and tutorials.

We offer timely feedback from tutors. We also value the learning from students’ experiences with other work and organisations and support their reflections on their academic and personal development. We encourage them to develop skills relevant to life and work as well as for academic study. Typically, teaching takes place in face to face mode and in on-line environments and is informed by student feedback. 

Academic Input

Our faculty staff have a wide range of industry and academic experience and deliver the vast majority of lectures and seminars. We recognise the importance of continuing professional development and the accreditation of awards relating to the HE Sector, such as HEA recognition.

Contacts Hours

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. You will typically have around 12 contact hours per week. Seminars in smaller groups will enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures. In addition, you will meet with your academic personal tutor. 

Independent learning / Overall Workload

When not attending lectures, seminars, workshops or other timetabled sessions you will continue learning through self-study. Typically, this involves reading journal articles and books, undertaking research in the library, working on projects, and preparing for coursework assignments/examinations, workshops and seminars.

Your module tutor will direct you towards specific readings and/or activities to complete before class.

  • The composition of the course and how it will be delivered, and the balance between the various elements, such as the number and type of contact hours that students can expect each week (for example, lectures, seminars, feedback on assignments) and expected self-study time. Should state: Your actual contact hours will depend on the optional modules you select.
  • Teaching methods, especially any discipline specific or innovative methods
  • Expectations of how students will learn and be supported in their learning
  • Work-based learning and employability activities
  • Indication as to the type independent study students will need to undertake and how they will be supported in their learning.

A variety of assessment methods are used through the programmes.  Practical elements of the programme are assessed through observations, gathering of evidence through portfolios and multi-media presentations.  Written assessments are usually in work related formats, for example business reports.  Some modules allow for negotiated forms of assessment to allow working students to base their work in situ and draw on their working environment.  In these situations, this must be agreed with the tutor in advance.

Feedback

You will receive feedback on all practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor.

We aim to provide you with feedback within 15 working days of hand-in for formal coursework assessment.

*You must achieve a pass mark of 40 and above in all Year 1 compulsory modules as a prerequisite, before progression to Year 2 optional modules. There are no examinations

A University Centre has close links with the college’s Business School and benefit from the Employers Advisory Board that has established partnerships with representatives from across the private and public sector. This encourages employer engagement as the Board engages in discussion about technical content of the curriculum and the development of wider employability skills, the provision of work placement opportunities, guest speakers, live case studies, and workplace visits.

Mature applicants (aged 21 and over) who do not have the qualifications outlined above, are welcome to apply and will be considered individually.

Work Based Learning Mode Applicants should be in full time employment.

If you do not have the above UCAS/GCSE requirements but you are a mature student, have appropriate experience, specific knowledge or industry-based qualifications, your application will be welcomed and still considered on case to case basis.
