The Education Foundation Year team is dedicated to the ethos of widening participation to ensure that potential students who aspire to have a university education are given the opportunity to do so.

Our new course offers an integrated Education Foundation Year in which you will develop the self-confidence, knowledge, skills and understanding needed for undergraduate study. This course is a gateway to Higher Education courses based within the Faculty of Education, the School of Childhood and Education Sciences and the School of Teacher Education and Development. The Foundation Year provides a supportive, motivational environment to assist you in your transition into your chosen BA (Hons) degree.

Canterbury Christ Church University is committed to a widening participation agenda ensuring that potential students who aspire to have a university education are given the opportunity to do so. It is sometimes the case that students do not have the necessary entry requirements for admission to a degree course or the subject pre-requisites, for a range of reasons. The introduction of a Foundation Year in Education is a gateway to allow you an opportunity to demonstrate an interest in Education related subjects.

To apply for the Foundation Year you do not need to have a significant prior knowledge of education related subjects but should be motivated to study the subject for a potential career in the wider children’s and/or education workforce. The Foundation Year will offer you a supportive, motivational environment in which to acquire and develop the self-confidence, knowledge, skills and understanding which, on successful completion, will ensure you are prepared for further studies at degree level and that your student experience is significantly enhanced.

The University’s Faculty of Education has a strong reputation for teacher education, developed over more than fifty years.

The Foundation Year welcomes prospective students who are enthusiastic and motivated but may not have the requisite background to complete a degree in three years.

The Education Foundation Year provides a holistic approach to educational studies. Modules undertaken will include Applied Mathematics, English, Science, Communication and Academic Skills, Introduction to Education, Human Development through the Lifespan as well as Personal and Career Development. In addition, course tutors from all relevant disciplines will lead

optional modules specifically linked to your chosen degree studies. All modules are linked both in content and assessment with academic skills for higher education embedded into all modules.

Your individual needs are addressed by teaching in small, friendly seminar groups. We believe that every student brings with them a wealth of knowledge and experience and should be encouraged to contribute to group activities and discussions. To support you throughout the Foundation Year you will be allocated module tutors and a named personal tutor.

Individual modules place emphasis on the transferable skills in oral and written communication, information technology and use of statistics, as well as specialist subject skills and knowledge. Students develop a strong and varied educational background that can support them as they move into their chosen career.

If you take the four year degree (including the Foundation Year), you will experience a holistic approach to education related subjects. Although there are separate sessions related to the various education related subjects, these are strongly linked both in content and in assessment. Additionally, the Communication and Academic Skills module incorporates the necessary study skills for work in higher education; this offers invaluable help for those who have not studied for some time or who feel they need to improve their way of studying.

Assignments are constructively assessed and you are encouraged to contribute to group discussions. Collaborative working through group seminars and tasks will form an important part of teaching, learning and assessment. You will be encouraged to reflect on the process of collaborative working.

On this course you will be encouraged to participate in the environmental sustainability programme at the University and to explore the Cathedral and city when investigating environmental and sociological concepts relating to education. Voluntary trips to the British Science Museum and the Houses of Parliament are planned to correspond with political and health influences on human development through the life span.

During the foundation year, you will take 5 core modules plus one optional module. Optional modules will be offered subject to cohort size and you may choose to take a module which relates to your overall degree choice.

However, you are not locked into the choice of overall course but may choose to change pathways at the end of the Foundation Year (Year 0). Alternatively, you may choose to take a Certificate of Completion and apply to another degree course, subject to entry criteria.

Introduction to Early Childhood

The aim of the module is to support you in gaining a foundation of knowledge and understanding in relation to the key theories, ideas, research and policies that influence the lives of young children and their families. In addition, you will be encouraged to explore how children aged from birth to eight spend their time and what influences and shapes their lives during the period of early childhood from both a local and global perspective.

Introduction to Special Educational Needs and Inclusion

The aim of this module is to ensure you begin to develop an understanding of the issues that surround discrimination, disability and equality in our society and of the concept of inclusion with a particular focus on children, young adults and their families. The history, psychology, economic and social dimensions of these issues will be explored and you will begin to develop your analytical skills.

Introduction to Physical Education

The aim of the module is to build knowledge, skills and understanding of the discipline of physical education. It will offer an insight into the nature and purpose of physical activity and an overview of some of the issues in teaching and learning of physical education in schools. Additionally, the module aims to give an introduction to the practice of physical education through practical experiences in a range of activities.

Introduction to Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring

The aim of the module is to introduce you to a range of helping professions within which counselling, coaching and mentoring relationships are developed. The concept of a helping relationship will be explored and you will identify and define the activities of counselling, coaching and mentoring.

Introduction to Sociology of Education

This module discusses the relationship between sociology and education. It identifies the ways in which sociology attempts to explain the relationship between educational opportunities, social class, gender, race and ethnicity. The module explores the contribution of a range of perspectives such as functionalist, Marxist, feminist and others. Additionally, you will examine your own educational lived experiences, and that of others, through a theoretical perspective lens.

On successful completion of this year you will then continue your studies on the degree course you chose.

We continually review and where appropriate, revise the range of modules on offer to reflect changes in the subject and ensure the best student experience. We will inform applicants of any changes to the course structure before enrolment.

You will need to nominate a proposed  BA course (from the list below) that you plan to go on to after the Foundation Year (you may change this at a later stage). To continue onto a BA (Hons) degree you will need to successfully complete the foundation year.

Additional course costs

Although we aim to minimise any additional costs to students over and above the course tuition fee, there will be some additional costs which students are expected to meet.

You will study six modules during the Foundation Year. Each taught module has a standard 50 hours of student contact. This will typically consist of lectures, seminars, practical work, tutorials and feedback on assignments. You will also be expected to engage in 150 hours of self-directed study per taught module.

Academic input

The Education Foundation Year is supported by senior staff from all the BA (Hons) Education courses and you are therefore able to learn from lecturers from a wide variety of specialties. To support your study skills senior librarians and members of the Academic Support Team can offer workshops on topics such as academic referencing.
Knowledge and understanding is assessed via coursework, essays, problem solving exercises, portfolios, group and/or individual work, group projects, oral presentations, poster presentations, computer-based assessment, group presentation, seminar presentation, paper presentation, case study and audio or video presentation. Intellectual skills are assessed by coursework (including computer based assessment) and presentations. There are opportunities for you to receive feedback on performance before final assessments.

There are some additional entry requirements for two of the courses:

BA (Hons) Primary Education with Foundation Year.

There are specific requirements set by government for the teaching profession which mean that if students on this programme must successfully pass year one and must meet extra criteria before moving into year two. These are set out below.

You must have passed English, Maths and Science GCSE at Grade C or above. If you do not hold these qualifications advice on opportunities available to take either these exams or a University equivalency during the Foundation Year is available on the Foundation Year website.

You must also meet the following criteria before entering year two of the BA (Hons) Primary Education with Foundation Year :

  • Undertake a minimum of two weeks recent experience in a relevant classroom setting work –based experience.               
  • Have passed the Department for Education professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy
  • Obtained an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check
  • Completed a health check
  • Have attended and been successful at an interview with the BA (Hons) Primary Education team.

BA Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring with Education Foundation Year

To enter year two of this course you must have successfully passed year one and have attended and been successful at an interview with the BA (Hons) Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring team.
As a student on the Education Foundation Year, you will have access to senior specialist lecturers from a wide variety of courses. You will also be invited to attend open lectures and the Community of Practice lecture series that will enhance your knowledge of work based practice and allow you to gain information relating to future career opportunities.

The parent programmes to which we are affiliated work with industry stakeholders aligned to the continued development of our teaching programme, research and consultancy work.

Staff teaching the BA (Hons) degrees work with the education sector and industry to continually develop courses, research and consultancy.
