Our SKE Spanish courses are tailored to your individual subject knowledge needs, with the flexibility of studying for 8, 12, 16 or 20 weeks.

 This course is delivered entirely online and therefore has not been impacted due to Covid-19

Courses are free for those eligible for funding (see 'Fees, Funding & Bursaries' section below).

The Spanish Subject Knowledge Enhancement course aims, through a blend of self-directed learning and online tutorials, to:

  • refresh, consolidate and improve your subject knowledge;
  • develop your language and conversation skills;
  • practise vocabulary and grammar;
  • promote independent learning, improve meta-cognitive skills and develop your ability to identify and address your own learning needs.

The course is designed to meet your subject knowledge needs. Study is flexible and can fit around your lifestyle and commitments.

The course is designed for:

  • Pre-Initial Teacher Training (ITT) applicants who need to strengthen their existing subject knowledge;
  • Anyone who would like to improve their subject knowledge.

All the SKE course content is accessed online.

  • The course starts with an initial test to help identify your language level, followed by an online induction. Throughout the course, you participate in the weekly online tutorials and work through the online language activities.  At the end of the course, you take the final test to measure your progress.
  • You are expected to spend a minimum average of 25 hours a week working on the course.

Successful completion of the course is measured through engagement with the course and progress in the course tests.

This is a non-credit bearing course.

Technical Requirements

You must have the following:

  • a desktop or laptop personal computer (Windows or Mac);
  • a reliable internet connection;
  • a headset with integral microphone and USB connection.

For further details: Full technical specifications (pdf)

Please note: If you do not have the equipment listed, you will need to purchase it as funding is not available for IT equipment.

The Spanish Subject Knowledge Enhancement course blends self-directed online learning with live video conferencing. Scheduled live tutorials are held weekly online in small groups.  These are led by a tutor who is an experienced specialist teacher of your study language and will help you expand your language skills, particularly for classroom contexts.

The online interactive language system has an excellent international reputation, providing comprehensive immersion-based language learning for you to access according to your own schedule and even beyond the SKE course.  Mobile integration provides the flexibility to study wherever and whenever you wish, both online and offline.

The software is designed to help you gain confidence in the building blocks of language by practicing vocabulary, phrases and grammar in real-world contexts, reinforced through repetition and enhanced by multimedia resources.  Exercises cover all four linguistic skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, including proprietary speech recognition software which will enable you to adjust your accent and pronunciation.

The focus of the SKE course is on language acquisition for everyday situations and is suitable for those starting at a wide range of language levels, from Beginner to Advanced.  The software content and assessment are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), providing a recognised standard of achievement.

(According to the CCCU SKE Student Evaluation Survey)

“I didn’t have formal language qualifications when I applied to become a Spanish teacher. I was so glad I did an SKE course. The online tutorial was really good and our tutor was very supportive. I am still using resources including Rosetta Stone in my teaching now and I will go back to it in half term as I still have access for another year. It was all really easy to set up and there is even a tutorial online to help you set up Blackboard.”

Hugh, SKE Participant

“I did my first degree in French and Spanish and then went to Switzerland and I forgot my Spanish. The SKE course really helped me. When we were having the lectures, our tutor also gave tips on how to teach the subject as well as refreshing our skills. I feel a lot more confident now I’ve done the SKE.  I didn’t do a Spanish A level at school, I just learnt it at university so it was good to get a grounding in grammar which I didn’t get previously.”

Helen, SKE Participant

“I chose to do Spanish SKE because wanted to increase my chances in finding a job. I teach French but I also wanted to refresh my Spanish. I wanted to rebuild my confidence in Spanish and get feedback from a teacher. At first I was a bit scared because it was all online and I thought it would be a bit cold but really it is a warm and friendly atmosphere. Our tutor really followed up on things from the week before. Students are 100% involved in the lesson. I was really surprised about how well it worked online.”

Thiebault, SKE Participant
